The first album of new material from the new look Rare Earth features a nice piece of artwork on the front. Beyond the sleeve is a set of new material plus some covers. Of the latter, the band strangely choose to re-visit "Tobacco Road" from their first Get Ready album. The inclusion of Lennon and McCartney's "Lady Madonna" and the Four Tops' "Reach Out I'll Be There" doesn't really do them any favours. Far more interesting are the newer songs. OK, they're not going to storm the charts but at least Gil Bridges, Ray Monette and co are sounding a bit like they used to before Norman Whitfield clothed their music in string sections and backing musicians. Rare Earth stripped bare if you like. The only thing that grates slightly is Rick Warner's use of a Roland D50 synth. It was a great synth in its day but certain of it's characteristic breathy voices tend to sound a bit dated now. On the positive side Wayne Baraks is a worthy replacement for Peter Rivera, the former drummer who was lead vocalist in the band's prime.by UKDave, rateyourmusic
