On 20 June 1819, 200 years ago, the famous composer Jaques Offenbach was born in Cologne as "Jakob" Offenbach. The young cellist Raphaela Gromes, who already received excellent reviews and even celebrated chart successes with her first two albums for Sony Classical, has come up with a very special Offenbach album for the anniversary, having already presented Offenbach's "Hommage à Rossini" in a highly praised premiere recording on her last Rossini album. For, before Offenbach was acclaimed in musical theatre, he himself had a great career as a cellist and was even celebrated throughout Europe as the "Liszt of the cello".
For this recording Raphaela Gromes has chosen salon pieces for cello and piano or for two cellos. This fills a gap in her discography: The last major recording of pieces for cello and piano was actually 40 years ago. In the meantime, unknown manuscripts or those thought to have been buried have been discovered. Raphaela Gromes and her long-time piano partner Julian Riem present a world premiere recording of a virtuoso "Tarantelle" composed in Cologne
Offenbach's cello pieces are full of rhythmic subtleties and melodic beauties, they make the instrument sing, sparkle with good humour, but can also be deeply moving and are, in some cases, incredibly virtuosic. The recorded pièces for cello and piano include such character and salon pieces as the "Danse bohémienne", "Deux Âmes au ciel" Introduction e valse mélancholique", "Revérie auf bord de la mer", "La Course en traineau" and "Les Larmes de Jacqueline"
In addition, Raphaela Gromes has recorded the very last of Offenbach's 36 cello duos together with her long-time mentor, Munich cello professor Wen-Sinn Yang: The Duo, Op. 54, No. 3 in E major, is one of the most difficult and, formally speaking, the most capricious of the entire cycle
The album ends with Offenbach's probably most famous hit, the "Barcarolle", in a new, very special arrangement for two cellos and piano by Julian Riem.
