As displays of sonic excitement made with specific audiences in mind, the two Quincy Jones albums included in this set are tremendously effective performances, brilliantly recorded. Around the World was aimed at fans who like their quality big band music easy on the ear, for though there is some nice soloing by Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab and Benny Bailey, these are primarily lushly voiced atmospheric arrangements delivered by a brilliant, airy and swinging band. I Dig Dancers was, as the title indicates, aimed at attracting dancers and securing an identity for the band as a dance organization. There is, therefore, a plenitude of tunes eminently suitable for tripping the light fantastic to a band with a full solid ensemble sound and relaxed, clever and swinging arrangements at tempos tailor-made for the ballroom. Packed with the cream of New York s jazz musicians, as a musical organization the band was top-flight. Whether catering for listeners or dancers, Quincy Jones would have it no other way.
