The pairing of Francis Poulenc and Reynaldo Hahn on this album may seem contrived merely because of biographical parallels between the two men, for their musical approaches and styles are quite different, if not at odds. Poulenc's neo-Classical, self-conscious parodies in the Sinfonietta and the dry, sarcastic wit of the Aubade are a world away from Hahn's pretty, even precious, Romanticism, which is unabashedly on display in La bal de Béatrice d'Este. However, the discerning listener may find in Poulenc streaks of Hahn's pensiveness and languor, which his comic antics never completely conceal; there is in Hahn a buoyant, diatonic tunefulness that is readily found in Poulenc. (Interestingly, some of Poulenc's adaptations of Renaissance music bear a remarkable similarity to Hahn's antique pastiches in this ballet.) Furthermore, their fondness for unusual chamber combinations is striking, and the transition from the Aubade to La bal de Béatrice d'Este is not at all jarring because they both share the charm and ambience of the salon orchestra. The New London Orchestra, conducted by Ronald Corp and featuring Julian Evans as pianist, plays with conviviality and bright color, and the sound of the 1989 recording is pleasant.

    Review by Blair Sanderson, Allmusic.com

Seeing the label or listing, older record collectors may think of the New London Orchestra which accompanied Myra Hess and Gina Bachauer during and immediately after the war, and whose last discs appeared in the mid-1950s. But this is a new New London Orchestra, greeted with enthusiasm on its debut only 18 months ago and now entering the record catalogue under its rising young conductor Ronald Corp (who has been making his name in the choral field). His declared aim is to present less frequently played works (though not neglecting others entirely); and this first disc certainly exemplifies his enterprising policy. It is 20 years since we had a new recording of Poulenc's vivacious Sinfonietta, written in 1947 for BBC Radio's Third Programme; and it can be said at once that the present version knocks spots off its predecessor (the Orchestre de Paris under Pretre on EMI—nla), not only in crispness and precision—the scherzo, for example, truly sparkles—but in finesse: the Andante's silky melodic lines are seductive. Critics have been trenchant about Poulenc's lack of ease in symphonic construction (and at 28 minutes this is rather more than the name Sinfonietta might suggest), and the composer himself, in saying that he ''dressed too young for his age'', seems to have admitted that the flippancy of the finale is a trifle forced; but let us not be too puritanical about a work avowedly written primarily as entertainment, especially when played with such verve and clarity as here (and as admirably recorded).

The orchestra's wind demonstrates its excellent quality in the Hahn (goodness knows how long it is since the last recording of this!), which is scored only for wind, harps and piano. It is an elegantly written pastiche-antique suite of dances, with an apparent homage, in the canonic Trio of the Courante, to Saint-Saens, the work's dedicatee (but was he, as the note claims, Hahn's old master?). This is a soigne performance, with exemplary chording and balance: the ''Romanesque'' in particular is delicately shaded.

With Poulenc's Aubade we are on more familiar territory. The composer's own recording (Pearl) is of interest purely as a historical document, since the orchestral playing is scrawny and the ensemble precarious generally. Corp's phrasing and control are at least the equal of Conlon's (Erato/RCA), and Julian Evans is quite as spirited as Duchable (and pedals more cleanly), but in this work the recording is less happy. Whereas Duchable's piano was over-bright in relation to the orchestra (so that its rocking semiquavers in the finale, for instance, were too obtrusive), here the reverse is the case: the piano is set too far back, dulling the tone of the opening cadenza and hampering clean articulation in the Rondeau. A pity, since the other two works are so good, but the overall reaction created by this disc is of keen anticipation of the New London Orchestra's future issues.'
