Their ninth studio album shows Poor Genetic Material, considered by many as Germany's best art- and progrock band, at the peak of their creative powers. Absence - the experience and feeling of lacking something. People or ways of life that we have got used to, that gave us comfort and security, that have left their mark on us and shaped our character. Yet, many of them have turned to hardly more than faint memories. That may be so simply because we have changed. Or because whatever or whoever these feelings were attached to is now - for various reasons - beyond our reach. This experience is the central topic of Poor Genetic Material’s ninth studio album.
Poor Genetic Material are regarded by many as one of Germany’s best Art- and Progrock bands. They have earned this reputation mainly with their two most recent, literature inspired efforts Island Noises and A Day In June. On A Day In June PGM-singer Philip Griffiths shared vocal duties with his father Martin (of BEGGARS OPERA fame). Now, Martin Griffiths, whose voice has lost nothing of its power and fascination, has joined Poor Genetic Material as a full member, so that father and son will go on sharing PGM’s microphone.
Absence is bookended by the 30-minute title track that combines all the elements of Poor Genetic Material’s distinctive musical style: Excellent playing combined with inventive songwriting went into creating music that ranges from the delicately melodious to the noisily progressive, from accessible tunes to quirkily complex arrangements. Absence shows Poor Genetic Material at the height of their creative powers.
