The Magnificat was the very first work Bach composed after his appointment as Cantor of St. Thomas's School in Leipzig in 1723. We can imagine the care he lavished on the work that was to establish him in this new function. It was revised some years later: the key was changed to D major and the forces were considerably enlarged. This is the version in which one of Bach's most famous choral works has come down to us.
Each of the compositions on this record was destined to celebrate the Easter festivities, but was originally a secular piece. The borderline between the terrestrial and the celestial worlds meant very little to Bach, who, making full use of the principle of the parody, here created two quite extraordinary cantatas and an Easter Oratorio.
Bach devoted particular attention to the feast of the Ascension, as is borne out by the presence of three cantatas and an oratorio in the catalogue of his works. After the Christmas and the Easter Oratorios, this was the last of his oratorios, which is often wrongly classified among the cantatas because of its brevity.
Surely one of the greatest gifts the Lutheran Church ever made to music was to have charged Bach with the duty of producing a cantata for every week of the year! He left us no fewer than three for the first Sunday in Advent alone, composed between 1714 (at Weimar) and 1724-31 (at Leipzig).
They are inspired in very different ways by Luther's original chorale: it is as if all of baroque Germany is contained between the sobriety of BWV 61 and the ambitious frescoes of BWV 36 and 62.
