Recorded in 1987, this disc by Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe and the choral-instrumental ensemble La Chapelle Royale came in advance of most of the historical-performance recordings that have delved deeply into Bach's cantatas and their world. It was, in fact, the first digital recording of the Trauerode, BWV 198. Despite some competition, this remains an exemplary Bach performance, and it was a superb candidate for reissue in Harmonia Mundi's HM Gold greatest-hits series. The Trauerode, or Funeral Ode, is a secular work despite its theme. It was composed in 1727 for a Leipzig University memorial to Christiane Eberhardine, Electress of Saxony. The cantata is thus unusual in being both secular and serious. It is closer to the language of Bach's sacred cantatas than is, say, the Coffee Cantata, but there is something in the combination of pomp and parading pictorial effects that sets it apart. The accompanied recitatives are the soul of the work, fitting texts in which the deceased leader's virtues are extolled in lengthy constructions ("As far as the wide Vistula's reaches, along the Dniester's and the Warta's course, as far as the Elbe and the Mulde flow, town and countryside extol you"). Sample track 4, with its chilling instrumental evocation of funeral bells dying away in the air ("Let the vibrating sound of the bells awaken terror in our downcast souls…"). All the soloists catch the formal but vivid sounds of the music and text well, and they are matched by precision work from the singers and instrumentalists in the Cantata No. 78, "Jesu der du meine Seele," BWV 78. The overall interpretation is rich and rather muted, and the cantata's famed duet, "Wir eilen mit schwachen doch emsigen Schritten" (We hurry with weak but eager steps, track 12), has a diaphanous, almost evanescent quality. The original booklet, recounting not only the circumstances of these works' composition but also putting them into the wider conditions and aims of Bach's life at the time, has been retained in full, and it's a model of its kind.
