Georg Friedrich Händels großes Chor-Oratorium "Israel in Egypt" ist das wertvollste Geschenk, das der Komponist der Chormusik machen konnte: Der Chor fungiert als Protagonist in diesem klangmächtigen Werk, das in bildhafter Dramatik vom alttestamentarischen Exodus erzählt. Viel zu lange war das Oratorium nach seiner wenig erfolgreichen Uraufführung im Londoner King’s Theatre in Vergessenheit geraten, bis es im Zuge der Barock-Renaissance unter Felix Mendelssohn im 19. Jahrhundert wiederentdeckt wurde.
Der Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks und Concerto Köln begegneten sich im November 2008 unter der Leitung von Peter Dijkstra zum ersten Mal zur gemeinsamen Zusammenarbeit im Münchner Prinzregententheater. Mit dem Kölner Ensemble für Historische Aufführungspraxis und dem Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks trafen zwei vielfach ausgezeichnete Spitzenensembles aufeinander. Beeindruckend verbinden sich die starken individuellen Charaktere der Gesangssolisten - Namen wie Rosemary Joshua und Kobie van Rensburg stehen für prägende Sängerpersönlichkeiten auf dem Gebiet der Barockmusik - mit Chor und Orchester zu einer vielschichtigen und gleichzeitig von einer klaren gemeinsamen musikalischen Zielsetzung getragenen Interpretation. Bei der vorliegenden Einspielung handelt es sich um die dreiteilige Originalversion von 1749.
