Smith and her band represented the vanguard of the American punk movement in the mid-'70s.

Punk rock's poet laureate Patti Smith ranks among the most influential female rock & rollers of all time. Ambitious, unconventional, and challenging, Smith's music was hailed as the most exciting fusion of rock and poetry since Bob Dylan's heyday. If that hybrid remained distinctly uncommercial for much of her career, it wasn't a statement against accessibility so much as the simple fact that Smith followed her own muse wherever it took her – from structured rock songs to free-form experimentalism, or even completely out of music at times. Her most avant-garde outings drew a sense of improvisation and interplay from free jazz, though they remained firmly rooted in noisy, primitive, three-chord rock & roll.

Born in Chicago and raised in Philadelphia and nearby New Jersey, Smith eventually made her way to New York City, where she spent the early part of the 1970s immersed in the New York art scene, living with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe at the Chelsea Hotel and developing herself in a variety of creative mediums from poetry to painting to playwriting. By 1974, she'd begun to establish herself as a rock musician, playing shows with guitarist/bassist Lenny Kaye, then assembling what would soon become the Patti Smith Group. After Kaye, pianist Richard Sohl was the first to come on board, followed shortly after by Czechoslovakian-born guitarist/bassist Ivan Král and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty.

After independently releasing the "Hey Joe" b/w "Piss Factory" single, Patti Smith Group became the first of the CBGB-associated punk acts to score a major record deal when famed A&R man Clive Davis signed them to Arista in 1975. Released in December of that year, Horses fused Smith's unconventional post-beat poet lyrical style with a primitive rock minimalism that was striking and wholly unique. Though the album was credited to solely to Smith, the collective force of Smith, Kaye, Sohl, Král, and Daugherty together signified the stark power of the burgeoning punk movement, and by the time 1976's Radio Ethiopia arrived, it was attributed to Patti Smith Group. During a January 1977 tour date in Florida, Smith suffered a serious neck injury after falling from the stage into the concrete orchestra pit. Following a lengthy period of recovery and physical therapy, she and the group returned to produce what would be their commercial breakout in 1978's Easter. Produced by Jimmy Iovine and featuring the Bruce Springsteen co-written hit "Because the Night," Easter was widely hailed as one of the year's best albums and an artistic return to form after the somewhat difficult Radio Ethiopia. It was also notable for the absence of keyboardist Sohl, who was temporarily replaced in the studio by Bruce Brody.

As the '70s came to a close, so would the tenure of the original Patti Smith Group. Following the 1979 release of their fourth album, Wave, Smith and her newlywed husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith (MC5), relocated to Detroit, where she would spend most of the decade in semi-retirement while raising a family. Král would go on to work with Iggy Pop, compose music for a number of independent films, and record a number of solo works in his native Czech Republic. Sohl returned to record with Smith on her 1988 solo album, Dream of Life, before suffering a fatal heart attack in 1990. Since the mid-'90s, Smith's longtime creative foils Kaye and Daugherty, along with late-period bassist Tony Shanahan, have served as her primary band, and even though the Patti Smith Group name would no longer appear on album covers, they have remained her closest collaborators on-stage and in the studio.

After the success of Horses, Patti Smith had something to prove to reviewers and to the industry, and Radio Ethiopia aimed at both. Producer Jack Douglas gave "the Patti Smith Group," as it was now billed, a hard rock sound, notably on the side-opening "Ask the Angels" and "Pumping (My Heart)," songs that seemed aimed at album-oriented rock radio. But the title track was a ten-minute guitar extravaganza that pushed the group's deliberate primitivism closer to amateurish thrashing. Elsewhere, Smith repeated the reggae excursions and vocal overlaying that had paced Horses on "Ain't It Strange" and "Poppies," but these efforts were less effective than they had been the first time around, perhaps because they were less inspired, perhaps because they were more familiar. A schizophrenic album in which the many elements that had worked so well together on Horses now seemed jarringly incompatible, with Radio Ethiopia Smith and her band encountered the same development problem the punks would – as they learned their craft and competence set in, they lost some of the unself-consciousness that had made their music so appealing.

Review by William Ruhlmann, Allmusic.com

It's priggish if not stupid to complain that Radio Ethiopia's "four chords are not well played." If they were executed with the precise attack of an Aerosmith, then they would not be well played. For although there's no such thing as an unkempt heavy metal record–technocratic assurance is the soul of such music–unkempt rock and roll records have been helping people feel alive for twenty years. When it works, which is just about everywhere but the (eleven-minute) title track, this delivers the charge of heavy metal without the depressing predictability; its riff power–and the riffs are even better than the lyrics on this rockpoet experiment–has the human elan of a band that is still learning to play.

Easter is the third studio album by the Patti Smith Group, released in March 1978 on Arista Records. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, it is regarded as the group's commercial breakthrough, owing to the success of the single, "Because the Night" (co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Smith), which reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 in the UK. Easter was highly acclaimed upon its release. Writing in Rolling Stone, Dave Marsh called the album "transcendent and fulfilled." In Creem, Nick Tosches described it as "an album of Christian obsessions, especially those of death and resurrection", and called it Smith's "best work."

Patti Smith came back from the year-and-a-half break caused by her fall from a stage in January 1977 without having resolved the art-versus-commerce argument that had marred her second album, Radio Ethiopia. In fact, that argument was in some ways the theme of her third. Easter, produced by Bruce Springsteen associate Jimmy Iovine, was Smith's most commercial-sounding effort yet and, due to the inclusion of Springsteen's "Because the Night" (with Smith's revised lyrics), a Top Ten hit, it became her biggest seller, staying in the charts more than five months and getting into the Top 20 LPs. But Smith hadn't so much sold out as she had learned to use her poetic gifts within an album rock context. Certainly, a song that proclaimed, "Love is an angel disguised as lust/Here in our bed until the morning comes," was pushing the limits of pop radio, and on "Babelogue," Smith returned to her days of declaiming poetry on New York's Lower East Side. That rant (significantly ending, "I have not sold my soul to God") led into the provocative "Rock n Roll Nigger," a charged rocker with a chorus that went, "Outside of society/Is where I want to be." Smith made the theme from the '60s British rock movie Privilege her own and even got into the U.K. charts with it. And on songs like "25th Floor," Iovine, Smith, and her group were able to accommodate both the urge to rock out and the need to expound. So, Easter turned out to be the best compromise Smith achieved between her artistic and commercial aspirations.

Review by William Ruhlmann, Allmusic.com

This isn't punk rock unless you want it to be–Patti may not like categories, but she knows art is what you make it. What she and her boys are making is as basic as ever in its instrumentation and rhythmic thrust, but grander, more martial. That's what she gets for starting an army and hanging out with Bruce Springsteen (not to mention lusting after Ronnie Spector), and she could have done a lot worse: The miracle is that most of these songs are rousing in the way they're meant to be. Meanwhile, for bullshit–would it be a Patti Smith album without bullshit?–there's the stuff about "niggers" and "transformation of waste," and as if to exemplify the latter there's a great song from Privilege, a movie I've always considered one of the worst ever. Guess I'll look at it again.

Wave is the fourth studio album by the Patti Smith Group, released May 17, 1979 on Arista Records. This album was less commercially successful than its predecessor, Easter, although it continued the band's move towards more radio-friendly mainstream pop music. It was produced by artist/producer Todd Rundgren.

The Patti Smith Group's most conventional album, Wave was given a bright pop/rock sound by producer Todd Rundgren. It was the last album Smith made before marrying and retiring from record-making for nine years, and it can be heard as a farewell to the music business, from "Frederick," the love song to her husband-to-be, Fred "Sonic" Smith, that leads it off, to the version of "So You Want to Be (A Rock 'n' Roll Star)," among the most bitter accounts of fame on record. But Smith also achieves a sense of charm and sincerity on Wave that she hadn't even attempted on her earlier albums, even to the point of her imagined small-talk encounter with the late Pope John Paul I on the title track. Still, the overall mediocre quality of the material makes this the slightest of Smith's efforts.

Review by William Ruhlmann, Allmusic.com

A lot of folks just don't like Patti anymore, and so have taken to complaining about the pop melodicism ("AOR sellout") and shamanistic religiosity ("pretentious phony") she's always aspired toward. Me, I wish she'd forget she was such a bigshot, and I find "Seven Ways of Going" and "Broken Flag" as unlistenable as (and less interesting than) "Radio Ethiopia." But this is an often inspired album, quirkier than the more generally satisfying Easter–especially on the sexual mystery song "Dancing Barefoot," quite possibly her greatest track ever, and, yes, the reading for the dead pope that she goes out on.
