Long one of Israel's most popular singers, Ofra Haza broke through to international recognition during the mid-'80s when her traditional music found favor on the U.K. club circuit, its success leading to a series of unlikely pop projects. Born in Tel Aviv on November 19, 1959, Haza was the daughter of Yemenite parents forced to flee from their native country's Muslim regime; at the age of 12 she joined the renowned Hatikva theatrical troupe, and with that group, cut a number of award-winning records before serving a compulsory two-year tour of duty in the Israeli army. Upon her discharge, in 1979 she mounted a solo career, becoming a star not only at home but also in neighboring Arab nations; in 1983, her recording of "Chai!" placed second in the annual Eurovision Song Contest.

Inspired by the ancient melodies taught to her by her mother, Haza recorded Yemenite Songs in 1985, which featured traditional instruments as well as lyrics drawn from the 16th century poetry of Shalom Shabazi; not only a major hit at home, the album was a worldbeat smash in England, as well. With 1988's Shaday, she turned away from traditional sounds to pursue more dance-flavored material, and the single "Im Nin'Al" even reached the Top 20 on the U.K. pop charts, additionally becoming a club favorite in the U.S. Haza's music was also sampled on the Eric B. & Rakim rap classic "Paid in Full," and her vocals later found their way into M/A/R/R/S' seminal "Pump Up the Volume" as well.

Released in 1989, Desert Wind was sung largely in English, and its release corresponded with Haza's first American tour. For 1992's Grammy-nominated Kirya, she teamed with producer Don Was and welcomed guests Iggy Pop and Lou Reed; that same year, Haza also recorded the single "Temple of Love" with British goth rockers the Sisters of Mercy. Despite her success, however, she was silent throughout the middle of the decade, finally resurfacing in 1997 with a self-titled LP issued on her new label, BMG Ariola. Haza died unexpectedly of AIDS-related complications on February 23, 2000.

Ofra Haza first performed this song with the Shechunat Hatikva Workshop Theatre, appearing on television on IBA's General Television in 1978. She went on to become famous in Europe with the song in the year 1988, when a remixed version thereof, produced by Izhar Ashdot, reached the Top Ten in various countries and number one in several of these, most notably in West Germany where it topped the charts for nine weeks in the summer of 1988. In the UK the track was a Top 20 hit, peaking at #15 and in the U.S. it reached #15 on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart and #18 on Hot Modern Rock Tracks.

This CD made Haza a household name throughout Europe because it was her first to sell millions of copies there, earning her the nickname "the Israeli Madonna." She combines Hebrew, Yemenite, and English in prayers and original compositions with a driving European dance beat. Included is the international hits "Im Nin Alu" and "Galbi" (later made famous after rap stars Eric B. & Rakim sampled it for one of their hits). It's also available domestically on Sire with bonus remixes of the above tracks.

Review

The followup to Ofra Haza's landmark Shaday is a solid effort by Israel's late and great desert angel.

The darbuka which made Shaday's "Im Nin Alu" so exotic is done to great effect in "Ya Ba Ye." The mid-paced "I Want To Fly" has the same sound without the darbuka.

The best song by far and the most painfully relevant is "Middle East." Terrorism and fanaticism plague her beloved homeland, and the fanaticism runs rampant on both faiths (e.g. the groups Hamas and Hezbollah on one hand, Meir Kahane and Baruch Goldstein on the other). She truly wishes for peace between the two races, which unfortunately at this date, is like the song's two parallel lines that are destined never meet. This is a dance tune, by the way, and a catchy one at that.

More leaning towards the Israelis are the plight of Jews in Ethiopia and Yemen who cannot emigrate to Israel and too often are forced to convert to Islam by the people there. That is the topic of "Mm'mma." Being allowed to leave to practice one's faith is one thing, but being prevented to do that, that's something else.

The songs are more danceable here than on Shaday, such as "In Ta" and "Wish Me Luck." The latter song is an optimistic note on what the morrow will bring, happiness or sorrow.

Her soaring melodic voices are at their best in the ballads, such as the mournfully beautiful "Kaddish" and "Slave Dream." As explained in the notes before the song lyrics, the kaddish is a prayer said on someone's death. The desert trek songs "Fata Morgana" and "Da'asa" are also showcases for her voice. The trek from Yemen to Israel was after all, what defined her family's life and as such, remain special to Ofra Haza. Even her mother makes a guest vocal appearance on the former song.

In closing, a kaddish to the victims of the current Middle East violence, both Israeli and Arab, and a special one to Ofra Haza, who made two truly great albums, this one and Shaday.

Review

Kirya, Ofra Haza's 1992 release, is a more sombre affair after the danceable Desert Wind. It's more thematic of Israel itself, its past history and current legacy as a Middle Eastern warzone.

Her soaring vocals are still in effect in the Hebrew-sung title track. As she explains in a note before the lyrics, Kirya is an ancient Hebrew nickname for Jerusalem. It's a song praising Jerusalem as incomparable in beauty, but a city where so many of Israel's sons die everyday because of her, something that continues still today.

"Horashoot (The Bridge)" implies crossing the bridge together, in a relationship like marriage, for a better tomorrow. This song is in reference to the Middle East situation, where neither side wants to cross that bridge, yet Ofra believes that "we can cross the bridge together/to cross the bridge forever." The musical tone is purely Middle Eastern, except she uses synthesizers instead of the darbouka which made Shaday such an exotic album.

"Innocent" is a hymn to the refugees torn apart by war, bereft of hope, and in the case of children, bereft of parents. The chorus sung in Hebrew and puts Ofra's vocals to great effect: "Oh my god, I want to be wherever you are." It ends with a chorus of backing vocalists going "Na na na na na na. etc."

The bleakest but best song on Kirya is "Trains Of No Return". This song is a reference to the trains carrying Jews to their destinations in Auschwitz, Dachau, and Buchenwald. She sings of the trains "Don't let them roll again" and "we need the rain…to wash the trains." This is song half in English. The elegiac violin adds to the song's desolateness in a way Itzhak Perlman's violin would do in Schindler's List.

Another half-English song, "Mystery Fate and Love" has a mystical ambience about it, as she asks her god to "give me a hand to hold on to."

Set in "ancient time", presumably Old Testament days, "Daw Da Hiya" is a young, beautiful, and passionate girl who violated the taboos of her time by taking a man without her father's permission, becoming pregnant out of wedlock, shamed her family, and ending up condemned to death. Iggy Pop does the English vocal narration while Ofra sings in Hebrew. It calls for progress in women's rights, as Iggy narrates: "In a time and place, where a woman can't show her face, her life is ruled by men. That shouldn't happen again." With the guitar, the music has a tinge of Spanish as well as Hebrew.

"Don't Forsake Me" is a plea against abandonment in old age but also the realization of mortality. She sings "Don't cast me away when I start to fade, when my mind's unmade. At one point, the synthesizers have that Middle Eastern sound that made "Im Nin Alu" a hit. Mostly English lyrics.

"Barefoot" is a slow samba-kind of number with Spanish guitar sung totally in Hebrew. "Take 7/8" is a Middle-Eastern flavoured dance song that figured in celebrations and wedding parties. The sax and ut, a bagpipe/violin like instrument figure here. When peace finally comes, let's all dance to this.

Ofra's voice is still robust and lovely. Kirya had no hint of the drastic change that would come with what would be her last album. Yet compared to Shaday and Desert Wind, it's definitely bleaker, despite having upbeat numbers. That may be because it came on the heels of the intifadeh of the late 80's/early 90's.

So the next time Israelis wonder why there should be peace, maybe they should remind themselves by the title track.

Review

The final disc from Israeli diva Ofra Haza, recorded in 1997, prior to her too early death from AIDS-related complications, showcases her multifaceted pop styles. It might be more mainstream than her earlier work, but it expands her horizons, and the powerful opener, "Show Me," harks back to that work with Middle Eastern instruments. "Im Nin Alu 2000" updates her best-known piece, although the major change from the original is just a pounding bass synth that powers the tune along. "Give Me a Sign" is sung in English, with a French spoken word interlude, with echoes of overblown Sarah Brightman to the arrangement and performance (which is also unfortunately true of "Sixth Sense," where the idea works better). Musically, "You" is gloriously atmospheric, from the eerie cello to Haza's haunted vocal. The cover of Carole King's "You Got a Friend" works perhaps better than it should, with a very heartfelt performance. Looking in retrospect, "One Day" makes for a poignant ending to the disc. While there's perhaps too great a reliance on keyboard and orchestra, the record rises above all that, and shows the singer Haza would probably have become, had time allowed. The sadness is that she didn't achieve the greater international acclaim her talent warranted, but this stands as a wonderful swan song.

Forever Ofra Haza – Her Greatest Songs Remixed is a 2008 greatest hits album of recordings by Israeli singer Ofra Haza, released on the Edel Records label. The compilation features remixed versions by production team Ferris Bueller and Kai Panschow of tracks from Haza's international albums, mainly focussing on material from the bestselling Shaday (1988) and Desert Wind (1989), including some of her best-known songs like "Im Nin' Alu", "Galbi", "Shaday", "Love Song", "Ya Ba Ye", "Fatamorgana" and "Kaddish" as well as the previously unreleased recording "The Poem".
