From director Peter Weir (Dead Poet's Society), comes this crime drama about an boy who witnesses a murder and the cop, played by Harrison Ford, who will stop at nothing to protect the boy. Creating the Oscar nominated music was Maurice Jarre who had previously worked with Weir on The Year Of Living Dangerously. For Witness Jarre created one of his most fascinating and iconic synth heavy scores.
Composer Maurice Jarre is father to international synth-pop star Jean-Michel Jarre. With WITNESS, it looks as if the elder statesman took a cue or two from his scion. Tense yet atmospheric and poignant, much like the film it accompanies, Jarre's score ushers in the conflicting dualities of the film's Amish and modern-urban backdrops with windswept electronics.
WITNESS offers a soundtrack of differing moods and colors, from the new-age soundscapes of the opening sequence to the staccato, melancholic orchestral build-up and breakdown of the tense, closing number. Jarre has always been a master of audiovisual dynamics, and his blending of symphonic and electronic instrumentation makes for a compelling experience that can be enjoyed independently of the filmAll Music Guide
I've been collecting movie music now for almost eight years. So why haven't I noticed before how talented a composer Maurice Jarre is? The music which he brings to "Witness", flowing like a waterfall of kaleidescopic colors from the synthesizers, seems to me to be filled with awe and reverence for the Amish people depicted in the movie and their culture. This is evident in tracks like the Main Title theme (variations of which are heard throughout the CD)and "Building the Barn", which provides a light-hearted, classical air to what might be an ardurous task for anyone else; yet the track accentuates the people's goal of working for the greater good. Toward the end of the disc is what sounds like a chase sequence which has to be heard to be believed. I guess I just never saw Jarre as being capable of creating such drama and beauty in sound before.Ben Riddle, Amazon
