Francesco Feo was one of the greatest Neapolitan composers of the first half of the 18th century. During a career extending from 1713 through 1760, the year before his death, he remained in Naples, where he composed operas, oratorios, cantatas, masses, passions, psalms, and canticles, among other works. His setting of Metastasio’s first opera libretto, Siface, led to commissions from Rome and Turin. His growing fame resulted in commissions from Madrid and Prague; Hasse, resident in Dresden, where Feo’s works were also performed, wanted to entrust Feo with leading the premiere of a serenata he wrote for Naples. The music historian Charles Burney praised his works for their “fire, invention, and force in the melody and expression in the words.”
Feo’s Masses are settings of the Kyrie and Gloria in multiple movements, though some, such as the one included here, have a separate Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, which are generally much shorter than the Kyrie-Gloria. In the Mass recorded here, the five sections time out as follows: Kyrie, 4:50; Gloria, 27:49; Credo (also multiple sections), 9:49; Sanctus, 1:25; Agnus Dei, 1:26. While the Gloria uses a varied orchestra including trumpets, flutes, and oboes, the three concluding movements are modestly scored. The Confitebor is a setting of Psalm 110 (Vulgate numbering) of a type often required for vespers.
The performances here make a good case for Feo as a neglected composer worth rediscovering. The performances are vigorous without excessive speed. The soloists are an accomplished lot, and thankfully they sing with enough vibrato to make them sound like human beings. The two works on this disc are the only music of Feo to be found in the current catalog. This disc is more than a curiosity.
