Le patrimoine folklorique de la péninsule anglaise fut une source fondamentale d’inspiration pour Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), qui, à l’instar de Bartók ou Kodály en Europe Centrale, y puisa matière à inventer son propre langage mélodique et harmonique, non moins personnel que celui de ses collègues continentaux. En poursuivant l’enregistrement de tous les arrangements de chants populaires réalisés par le compositeur anglais, Albion Records réalise une entreprise d’une haute importance. Formidable porte d’entrée de ce second volet à appréhender par petite touches, et qui comprend quinze premières mondiales, Searching for Lambs, chant anglais ici pour voix et violon, évoquera directement certains des plus grands chefs-d’œuvre de Vaughan Williams, tels que la Norfolk Rhapsody No. 2 et plus encore le thème chanté par le baryton dans l’incipit de la Fantasia on Christmas Carols. Fascinant de voir comme tous les chants étudiés par le compositeur ont pu, à tout moment, stimuler son imagination créatrice, et forger la couleur si spéciale de son langage orchestral. Mais à la différence de Britten, qui ajoute plus spontanément une couleur poétique à ses arrangements, Vaughan Williams témoigne d’une rigueur étonnante dans la retranscription et la diffusion de ces chants. Les parties de piano (qui n’était pas l’instrument favori du compositeur) sont particulièrement épurées, laissant la part belle à la voix et donc au texte.
