Love Starved Heart: Rare and Unreleased is a compilation album by Marvin Gaye. Released in 1994 on Motown Records, the collection features some rarities from the soul singer's catalog during his formative years in the label between his breakthrough year as an R&B star in 1963 to around the time of his late-1960s hits including "I Heard It through the Grapevine". Covering material he worked on with luminaries such as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Smokey Robinson and William "Mickey" Stevenson, the disc showcases Gaye's growth as a vocalist. In 1999, an expanded version was released including bonus tracks and a rare interview.

Love Starved Heart assembles 25 unreleased tracks recorded by Marvin Gaye between 1963 and 1971, Motown's golden era. That it took three decades for these songs to see the light of day speaks far more to the intensity of the label's assembly line production ethic than to the quality of the material itself at their most pedestrian, these are fine performances simply lost in the shuffle, but at moments like "It's a Desperate Situation," "When I Feel the Need," and "This Love Starved Heart of Mine (It's Killing Me)," Gaye achieves the same peaks of his hits of the era, crafting performances of such sublime beauty and haunting poignancy that their failure to reach the masses until now is nothing short of remarkable. Still, where classics like "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Ain't That Peculiar" tend to suffer from years of oldies radio wear and tear, Love Starved Heart sounds positively refreshing in their own way, these long-lost songs reaffirm the timelessness of Marvin Gaye's brilliance even more than the familiar hits on which his reputation rests.

This collection of rare and previously unreleased Gaye performances originally appeared in 1994; augmented by several bonus tracks, it's now part of Motown's Lost and Found series. While the selection of album cuts and B-sides on the earlier Seek and You Shall Find is touched with genius, Love Starved Heart's effectiveness is frequently hampered by lackluster material. This isn't a bad disc; the star does his best with the likes of "You're a Son of a Gun." Gaye aficionados who don't already own the disc will appreciate having it back in print, and even casual fans should hear "Dark Side of the World," a neglected gem from the "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" era. But for the most part, this isn't essential Marvin.
