… you get here is perhaps the best of all worlds: a major symphonic work idiomatically played by a first-rate virtuoso orchestra under the hands of a conductor whose contact with the work looks back to the symphony's very creation, captured in vivid, realistic sound none of the russian maestros mentioned above could ever aspire to.
The symphoy is accompanied by Shostakovich's orchestration of Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death, superbly and idiomatically sung by Robert Lloyd (a fluent russian speaker and the owner of a sonorous, deep bass voice naturally geared towards this repertoire; I understand his mother was actually russian). These songs are better known in Rismky-Korsakov's edition, and Shostakovich's orchestration effort kind of returns to them the power and basic strength that characterises the songs as originally written by Mussorgsky.
