In the lineup of promising music geniuses whose lives were cut short, Norbert Burgmüller (1810-1836) is an imposing figure. During his lifetime, he made an impression on Mendelssohn and found an ardent champion in Schumann, who proclaimed "After Franz Schubert's early death, no other death could cause more grief than that of Burgmüller." He studied composition with Louis Spohr, who left a mark on the four string quartets. Three of them were completed while Burgmüller was still a student, but nothing in them suggests juvenilia. These are serious works steeped in a post-Beethoven outlook. While drawing upon Spohr's classicism and 'quatuor brillant' style, they look forward to early Romanticism and have lyrical qualities akin to Schubert.
Clear signs of Spohr's influence can be seen in the String Quartet No. 1 in A minor op. 4 (1825). The opening "Allegro" is like a synthesis of violin concerto and string quartet with its flashy violin passagework. Yet the content is not all virtuosic display. Burgmüller's expressive intent is more profound and he ratchets up the drama with tense and daring modulations. The "Adagio" is enveloped in pathos with its throbbing minor key and dark-hued pulsating cello part. Burgmüller's melodic lines are adorned with semitone intervals conveying forlorn emotions. As a stark contrast, the finale is dramatic and fast, and loaded with sudden dynamic swings. There's also a terrific violin-viola duet and a massive coda that aspires for orchestral density. This string quartet is the earliest surviving work from Burgmüller's pen and reveals a creative genius, especially with regards to melody. According to the liner notes, by the time he embarked on this quartet, Burgmüller's "powers of melodic imagination [were] already superior to his teacher [Spohr]."
The String Quartet No. 3 in A-flat major op. 9 (1826) is another work indebted to Spohr. The opening "Allegro moderato" gives the first violin primacy with bright spiccato bowing, virtuosic leaps, and gorgeous melodic arcs. This movement is full of invention and offers a satisfying progression of ideas and harmony, specifically its sublime shifts from major to minor. Next is a serious and tuneful minuet in C minor with a drumming repeated note figure lending it a martial quality. The chromatic "Adagio" embodies Beethovenian depth and obliges the cello's lower registers. Much of the finale is more relaxed than what came before. The content wavers between a pizzicato folk dance and cantabile lyricism with occasional shocks of minor-key harmony for dramatic purpose.
