In the lineup of promising music geniuses whose lives were cut short, Norbert Burgmüller (1810-1836) is an imposing figure. During his lifetime, he made an impression on Mendelssohn and found an ardent champion in Schumann, who proclaimed "After Franz Schubert's early death, no other death could cause more grief than that of Burgmüller." He studied composition with Louis Spohr, who left a mark on the four string quartets. Three of them were completed while Burgmüller was still a student, but nothing in them suggests juvenilia. These are serious and beautiful works steeped in a post-Beethoven outlook. All of them are in minor keys, and while drawing upon Spohr, they look forward to early Romanticism and have lyrical qualities akin to Schubert.
Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" may have even inspired the String Quartet No. 4 in A minor op. 14 (1835). Certainly the opening "Allegro moderato" has the same depth and stormy epic quality in its 15-minute scale. There are dramatic gusts of powerful ideas with climaxes of emotion, plus startling dissonance during peaks of intensity. The texture nearly breaks the boundaries of the string quartet genre and strives for orchestral sonorities. Burgmüller turns to late Beethoven in the "Andante," awash in endless melody and lovely expressive gestures that will astound the listener. Next is a witty and exaggerated caricature of a minuet, followed by a frolicking rondo of sunny temperament despite its tonic minor key.
Beethoven is the chief source of inspiration for the earlier String Quartet No. 2 in D minor op. 7 (1825), which relies heavily on motifs. This is most acute in the "Allegro" with its distinctive and motivic thematic material. The "Scherzo" can only be described as Beethovenian. It has a catchy theme of dynamic contrasts with a unison low bass figure that drives the subsequent motivic development. Burgmüller must have realized he had a winning scherzo tune on his hands, as he abbreviates the trio to give more room for the scherzo repeat. Instead of an animated rondo, Burgmüller goes for a virtuosic sonata-allegro in the 'quatuor brillant' style he no doubt picked up from Spohr. Here the first violin is highly ornamented and dominates the texture, while sharing space with the cello in passages of concentrated lyricism.— Hexameron
