Lynne Dawson proclaims her distinction as a Handel singer – if anyone doubted it – in the opening moments of this CD: Alcina’s aria, where her full, warm and intensely musical voice floats over the orchestra so appealingly. She has the grand manner necessary for this piece but also thedelicacy of nuance to make the music saymuch more than the mere notes indicate.
The strong and brilliant arias here are all compelling. There is a splendid piece with trumpet from the early opera Amadigi, in which she gives as good as she gets in the dialogue music; there is ‘Volate amore’ from Ariodante, done withenormous spirit and virtuosity; in ‘O had I Jubal’s lyre’ (taken pretty rapidly) the semi-quavers glitter and sparkle, while the perky little Resurrezione piece is delightfully thrown off.
The distinctive quality of Dawson’s voice, almost a hint of graininess (once more pronounced than it is now), lends character to all she does, and seems to help her particularly in the projection of grandeur and nobility – thus the First Harlot’s song in Solomon, where she renounces the threatened infant, is just a little more effective than the deceptive Second Harlot’s. And I feel that Athalia’s air, though sung with great spirit, might be even moreconvincing if she had some nastier tones in her voice – a call for savage vengeance in so open, golden a soprano isn’t dramatically quiteconvincing, even if it’s musically delightful.Similarly, Cleopatra’s ‘V’adoro, pupille’ in Giulio Cesare is slightly more persuasive thanher ‘Piangerò’ for want of tragic colouring.
But the Hercules piece is done with due sombreness and solemnity, although it was a mistake to reduce the orchestra to single strings here, as though this were an intimate private piece (as an invocation to the sun not to shine, it couldn’tbe much more public). This isn’t the onlyshortcoming in the accompaniment, which is not always ideally precise; and it is a pity that the small orchestra lacks a cello when one ofHandel’s rare cello obbligato arias is included – the aria from Arianna, sung with pastoral charm, is done with viola da gamba instead. These are trivial flaws, however, in a CD that happily enshrines the art and the lovely voice of one of the finest Handel sopranos around today.– Stanley Sadie
