Espousing the cause of the Institute for the Musical Heritage of Piedmont, over a ten-year period Opus 111 are issuing 50 discs of “Treasures of Piedmont”, mostly first recordings. The Academia Montis Regalis under Luigi Mangiocavallo has already opened our eyes and ears to orchestral music by Pugnani (10/96), perhaps the greatest violinist of his time. Now the same forces offer something well off the beaten track and only recently brought to light – a “musical translation” of Goethe’s novel Werther, which had been published a couple of decades previously. (The Baker-Slonimsky Dictionary, exceptionally, is totally wrong about this work.) It consists of over 20 musical items that were so linked with the events of the story as to be self-explanatory, with the aid only of a precis, to audiences of the time, to whom Werther, which had unleashed a furore of literary discussion, was very familiar. However, the extreme brevity of some of these items, some of which end inconclusively, and the fact that Pugnani’s work was performed in 1796 in the Burgtheater in Vienna, lend weight to the argument that it was intended as a melodrama (a genre rare in Italy though common in Germany); and Alberto Basso has reconstituted it with an actor in the role of Werther reading his letters (in an Italian translation), which are interspersed with, occasionally superimposed on, the relevant music, plus a narrator to fill in a gap in the letters at the end.
The music amounts to 66 minutes in all, beginning with a striking overture of tragic cast and then including not only programmatic sections – the spring bubbling from rocks, the storm after the ball (at which a minuet and an English country dance are played) – but imaginative evocations of mood such as the hero feeling faint or his despair at the thought that Charlotte cannot be his. Conspicuous in all this is the great importance Pugnani allots to the wind, both in ensemble and when employed soloistically: a solo clarinet represents Charlotte’s singing at the piano, for example, and a bassoon becomes prominent at Werther’s final farewell. But the strings are also treated generously: cello and viola soloists are heard at the end of the first part of the work, and in the second, at Werther’s tears, there is a substantial violin concertante, first cantabile then virtuosic. The ill-starred lovers’ last meeting is vividly treated as a dramatic recitative.
Graziano Piazza is a persuasive actor with a beautiful voice; the orchestra (of period instruments) throw themselves wholeheartedly into the music’s diversity, playing expressively and with spirit; and the work is well produced. Pugnani’s impressive dramatic sense makes one curious about his eight operas, none of which is known to us.'
