The London Oboe Band have been around since the early 1980s yet this, remarkably, is their first recording. I dare say that ten years ago an ensemble of these potentially troublesome baroque wind instruments might not have been the happiest sound imaginable, but things have come a long way since then, and there is really no faulting the standard of playing on this disc. Led by one of the best baroque oboists around, the band plays with consistently accurate intonation, good blending and refinement of sound. Every one of their instruments is a modern copy, and if that means that the sheer exotic colouring of some of those wonderful old oboes is missing, the benefits in reliability are obvious right from the first notes.
The word 'oboe' is used, I should say, in its broadest sense to denote a gathering of mixed double-reed instruments ranging from the conventional oboe down through various larger sizes to the bassoon, an ensemble which was popular in seventeenth-century France mainly for military purposes, but which also had a place in the theatre and in the ballroom. These last two functions are combined in the four suites of dances and other pieces on this disc, arranged from four stage works (three comic and one serious) by Philidor and Lully, the most familiar of which will be the latter's music for Moliere's Le bourgeois gentilhomme. It's all very pretty and French-sounding; how much you enjoy it depends only on how long you can take listening to one short dance piece after another (there are 45 here, the longest only 4'15''). A little extra excitement is introduced into some of the pieces through the efforts of a percussionist one number, appropriately a ''Charivari'', has her hilariously bringing into operation a chaotic kitchen department unrivalled since the days of Spike Jones, but in the main she plays with fastidious good taste and precision. Whether she was actually doing it at the same time as the rest of the Band, though, is a matter for speculation.–Lindsay Kemp
