This is the third and final volume in the complete recordings of Lil Green in chronological order as reissued by the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series. By 1947 Lil Green was beginning to sound more than a little like Ida Cox, even when handling songs from Tin Pan Alley rather than straight up out of the tried and true traditional blues repertoire. Comparisons could also be drawn between Lil Green and Nellie Lutcher or Julia Lee. While her "crossover" performances are worthwhile, there's nothing quite like hearing this woman savor the flavor of Bessie Smith hits like "Aggravatin' Papa," "Outside of That," and "You've Been a Good Old Wagon (But You Done Broke Down)." Green's own "Lonely Woman" has a powerful undercurrent running through it – there is even a remote possibility that Ornette Coleman was inspired by this record when conceiving his own composition of the same title in 1959. Even if the link is purely coincidental, these melodies have something wonderful in common. Green's final recordings for the Victor label are strengthened by the presence of tenor saxophonists Budd Johnson, Lem Johnson, and David Young. "Them There Eyes," closely associated with Billie Holiday, gets the full-throttle Lil Green treatment, and her sanguine rendition of Big Bill Broonzy's "Rock Me Baby" is utterly delicious. Earlier in her career this tough little woman had cheerfully sung songs of unbridled hedonism, expressed most pointedly on her January 1941 recording "Knockin' Myself Out (Gradually by Degrees)." In December of 1947 Green recorded "I Got to Have It," which sounds at first like a hymn to cigarettes and nicotine but soon appears to be about addictions in general. Subsequently, her career sputtered and went out with a pair of sides for the Aladdin label in 1949 and two for Atlantic in 1951. These are very cool modern-sounding blues records, with electrically amplified guitar right out in front alongside the vocal on the Atlantic date. What sort of a comeback would this woman have staged if she had lived beyond the age of 34? One can only imagine. After contracting bronchial pneumonia, Lil Green died on April 14, 1954.

    Review by arwulf arwulf, Allmusic.com

Chronological Classics CDs were a concept of Gilles Pétard of France who set out in 1989 to ambitiously re-release as many of the 78-rpm Jazz/Big Band (Swing) selections as he could, each with detailed and informative inserts. The first volume was Ella Fitzgerald 1935-1937 and, after producing close to 1,000 CDs, the series ceased operations in 2004 after filing for bankruptcy. By that time Pétard had started on some of the earliest 45-rpm/33 1/3-rpm discs encompassing many of the top Blues/R&B artists of the time.

Some covered in his massive series warranted more than one volume, and one such was Mississippi-born (December 22, 1919) R&B vocalist supreme and songwriter Lillian "Lil" Green who, had fate and pneumonia not stepped in and taken her from us at age 34 on April 14, 1954, would surely have been a major player in the formative years of R&R with her powerful voice, right up there with Ruth Brown, Etta James, Dinah Washington and LaVerne Baker - all now in the R&R Hall of Fame.

In these 3 volumes you get her 55 recorded sides from 1940 to 1951, including alternate takes and the two she put onto the national singles charts, one in 1940 and the other in 1942, along with their flipsides. The first such was Romance In The Dark, a song she co-wrote with renowned Blues singer/guitarist Willie Broonzy, better known as Big Bill Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley June 26, 1893 - died August 14, 1958) who accompanies her on the Nov 1940 # 23 Pop hit b/w What Have I Done? as Bluebird 8524. She and Broonzy, in fact, had first formed a nightclub act in the late 1930s after she had relocated to Chicago.

At that time there was no national singles chart devoted to what we now call R&B and there can be little doubt that, had one been in effect, more of her material would have registered there at least, including her first single, Cherry Tree Blues b/w Just Rockin’ as Bluebird 8464 earlier in 1940. Such a listing did, however, make its debut on Oct 24, 1942 as The Harlem Hit Parade, and one of the first to make those listing was Lil’s # 8 Let’s Be Friends b/w I’m Going To Start A Racket as Bluebird 8895.

All 4 sides to those two charting singles are in the 1940-1941 Volume of the series, along with her 1941 classic rendition of Kansas City Joe’s Why Don’t You Do Right? (released as Bluebird 8714 b/w Love Me). It didn’t make any national charts, although it more than compares favourably with the Feb 1943 # 4 on both the Pop and Harlem Hit Parade by the Benny Goodman Orchestra with vocal by Peggy Lee for Columbia Records.

I have repeated this same review for each of the volumes in the series and in doing so, I have noted that Pétard made some rare omissions by not including the self-penned Knockin’ Myself Out, which emerged in 1941 as Bluebird 8659, What’s The Matter With Love? and I’m Going To Copyright Your Kisses, two more 1941 recordings that came out as Bluebird 8754 and Bluebird 8790, although the volume does include the flipsides I Won’t Sell My Love, Country Boy Blues and How Can I Go On?

Still, a nice collection of the music of a talented R&B singer/songwriter whose career was cut way too short.
