Pure delight for Lalo Schifrin fans! World premiere of exciting soundtrack for Phillip Borsos crime thriller with Kurt Russell, Mariel Hemingway, Andy Garcia. Schifrin spins web of suspense, then unleashes wild excitement for full orchestra. Along way are detours into classic Schifrin jazz. Dynamic main title is one of several highlights, with scorching trumpet in lead. Haunting closing music ("Christine") also features trumpet. Composer wrote some 45 minutes of score with thematic development but also wrote over half hour of tiny fragments, transitions, stingers. We have assembled "the album" portion with maximum listening in mind but also include every short cue, fragment in "the extras" section of CD, plus roadmap in notes for those wishing to dispense with tighter album listening and instead program entire 77-minute score in sequence. Intrada was given access to actual 32-track digital session masters vaulted by MGM in pristine condition, allowing us to create brand new two-track digital stereo mixes of every cue! Tech Talk From The Producer…
Writing in the best of mystery/thriller modes, Lalo Schifrin composed a powerful score for The Mean Season, anchored by an imposing main theme, first heard on solo trumpet in the “Mean Season Main Title.” Rehearsal takes were handled by session trumpet players with the scorching final performance take (CD track 1) played by star musician Chuck Findley. Schifrin follows this hot number with a score full of rich variations on the melody plus dynamic action cues and sinister, quasi-atonal string pieces. Rounding out Schifrin’s work are some bright jazz-style source cues in his finest signature manner. His score (and our “album” portion of the CD) concludes with Chuck Findley trading in his trumpet for the mellower flugelhorn in the relaxed and beautiful melody for “Christine (End Credits)” (CD track 22).
To prepare this CD, Intrada located the complete 32-track digital session masters, stored in mint condition at MGM. This allowed us to create brand new digital two-track stereo mixes of every cue, offering astonishing detail and vibrancy in Schifrin’s vast arsenal of orchestral colors. For audio purists, every step of the process, from initial transfers through mixes, into editing and down to the final mastering of the CD remained in the digital domain.
The first portion of our CD (the album) features all of the major cues and set pieces of Schifrin’s score, assembled to provide a rewarding listening experience. For archivists, the second portion of our CD (the extras) includes virtually every brief cue, transition and alternate sequence Schifrin composed and recorded that does not appear in the album section.
