The Arcana recordings by the Italian ensemble La Reverdie approach, in their esoteric beauty, the medieval recordings by the American quartet Anonymous 4. There are, however, great differences. The La Reverdie recordings are not only based on minute scientific research but also on philosophical concepts, these usually being explained in the form of heady intellectual essays printed in the accompanying booklets in four languages. The music itself is eclectic, being carefully selected from manuscripts held in European university libraries. The interpretations are beautifully done, combining male and female voices with delightful instrumental accompaniments, all captured absolutely bewitchingly by the Arcana engineers under the perfectionist scrutiny of the late Michel Bernstein.
"Speculum Amoris" was the first La Reverdie recording for Arcana and its title is a reference to various medieval tracts in which the art of love was propagated. The introductory text makes it plain that the pieces collected here are intended to ignore the more heathen love poetry of the troubadours and of the Icelandic tradition; they concentrate on the mixture of the religious (adoration of Mary!) and the erotic to be found in the cultural centres of Europe from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The first six tracks are Marian love songs from Italy, England and France; these are followed by philosophical and erotic song-poems and several instrumental numbers from Italy, France, England and Austria.
