Kibuka is made up of members Dean Dennis (ex-Clock DVA) and Josephine Snook. The album Dystopia opens with some familiar Clock DVA Buried Dreams sounds including trippy samples throughout. The music is very experimental with vocal samples bouncing throughout reminding me of some of the things that Cabaret Voltaire were playing around with on their Conversation album. "Cell by Cell" takes up the pace and moves the album towards a more techno direction with some acid sounds that recall the glory days of early 1990's techno. By the third track, "Mystery Tour", there seems no end in sight for the pace of this release. It's been a long time since I've heard an electronic CD use "vocal samples" throughout. These vocal samples are done sparse as not to distract the listener from the constant changing sounds.
The track, "Theta", slows the pace of the CD down a few notches and even has what sounds like a funky bass line (very faint in the background). On to, "Ripple Effect", that has interesting tribal sounding rhythms. It's hard to pinpoint the overall sounds of this CD as it's unlike most techno CDs that I've listened to over the years and, believe me, I've listened to hundreds! "True Colours" reminds me of the sound that Dean Dennis was going with on his side project Sector. Overall, "System Control" would be my favorite track off this release with a sweeping rhythm that captivates your imagination. Then after the title track comes a nice Lustmord remix of "All Seeing Eye". If you are a completists of Brian Lustmord's material then you need this CD. This track has all the haunting ambient sounds that Lustmord has become well known for and picks up with a nice beat rarely heard in Lustmord's dark ambient releases. This track alone clocks in at 10 minutes and never lets up. The CD closes with the track, "Chimera", remixed by Spiritualized / Paul A. Browse (fellow ex-Clock DVA member). This track is even dark and more ambient than Lustmord's release! I can picture this track being used in a dark horror film like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer over opening / closing credits! You can tell a lot of work was put into this release and it not your typical factory cookie cutter material that seems to flooding the used bins at your local record store.
