This is an essential part of Joni's oeuvre. Mingus is considered by many critics as one of the high-water marks of Mitchell's prolific career. The album is minimalist jazz with the feel of a smoky jazz club, featuring an impressive list of session musicians: Weather Report's Jaco Pastorius on bass and Wayne Shorter on soprano saxophone, and Herbie Hancock on electric piano. For Shorter and Hancock, this was their first studio work together since recording with the Miles Davis band in the late 60s. Mingus is full of brillant moments, vocally as well as the guitars, bass, horns just some of the most challenging jazz/pop hybrid sounds. Recommended album to every Mingus, Mitchell or jazz listener out there.
