Jimmie Lawrence Vaughan is an American blues rock guitarist and singer based in Austin, Texas. He is the older brother of the late, Texas blues guitar legend, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Collection includes: 'Strange Pleasure' (1994); 'Out There' (1998); 'Do You Get The Blues?' (2001); Omar Kent Dykes & Jimmie Vaughan - 'On The Jimmy Reed Highway' (2007); 'Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites' (2010); 'Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites' (2011); Jimmie Vaughan - Baby, Please Come Home (2019).

As a founding member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Jimmie Vaughan was one of the leading Austin, Texas guitarists of the late '70s and '80s, responsible for opening the national market up for gritty roadhouse blues and R&B. Influenced by guitarists like Freddie King, B.B. King, and Albert King, Vaughan developed a tough, lean sound that became one of the most recognizable sounds of '70s and '80s blues and blues-rock. For most of his career, Vaughan co-led the Fabulous Thunderbirds with vocalist Kim Wilson. It wasn't until 1994 that he launched a full-fledged solo career.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Jimmie Vaughan began playing guitar as a child. Initially, Vaughan was influenced by both blues and rock & roll. While he was in his teens, he played in a number of garage rock bands, none of which attained any success. At the age of 19, he left Dallas and moved to Austin. For his first few years in Austin, Vaughan played in a variety of blues bar bands. In 1972, he formed his own group, the Storm, which supported many touring blues musicians.

In 1974, Vaughan met a vocalist and harmonica player named Kim Wilson. Within a year, the pair had formed the Fabulous Thunderbirds along with bassist Keith Furguson and drummer Mike Buck. For four years, the T-Birds played local Texas clubs, gaining a strong fan base. By the end of the decade, the group had signed a major label contract with Chrysalis Records and seemed bound for national stardom. However, none of their albums became hits and they were dropped by Chrysalis at the end of 1982.

At the same time the T-Birds were left without a recording contract, Jimmie's younger brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan, came storming upon the national scene with his debut album, Texas Flood. For the next few years, Stevie Ray dominated not only the Texan blues scene, but the entire American scene, while Jimmie and the Thunderbirds were struggling to survive. the T-Birds finally received a new major-label contract in 1986 with Epic/Associated and their first album for the label, Tuff Enuff, was a surprise hit, selling over a million copies and spawning the Top Ten hit title track.

the Fabulous Thunderbirds spent the rest of the '80s trying to replicate the success of Tuff Enuff, often pursuing slicker, more commercially oriented directions. By 1989, Jimmie Vaughan was frustrated by the group's musical direction and he left the band. Before launching a solo career, he recorded a duet album with his brother, Stevie Ray, Family Style. Following the completion of the record, Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a tragic helicopter crash in August of 1990. Family Style appeared just a few months later, in the fall of 1990.

After Stevie Ray's death, Jimmie took a couple of years off, in order to grieve and recoup. After a couple of years, he began playing the occasional concert. In 1994, he returned with his first solo album, Strange Pleasures, which received good reviews and sold respectably. Vaughan supported Strange Pleasures with a national tour. Out There followed in 1998. Released in 2010, Plays Blues, Ballads & Favorites found Vaughan covering songs by Jimmy Reed, Little Richard, Roy Milton, Roscoe Gordon and others who inspired him when he was first starting out as a musician. The like-minded Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites followed in 2011.

Jimmie Vaughan's first solo album includes a subdued country-gospel-blues eulogy for his late brother Stevie Ray in the form of "Six Strings Down," written by Art and Cyril Neville. The bulk of the recording, though, comes in the form of the relentless, Texas-blues rave-ups that made Jimmie the solid rock at the base of the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Dr. John gives a New Orleans shuffle to two songs he cowrote with Jimmie, but more typical is the first single, "Boom-Bapa-Boom," which boasts a hypnotic rhythm perfectly described by its title. Jimmie's refusal to play an unnecessary note makes his grooves irresistible.

Jimmie Vaughan's second solo album, Out There, is quite similar to its predecessor, Strange Pleasure, delivering a familiar blend of Texas blues and roadhouse blues-rock. Of course, that isn't a problem. Ever since the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Vaughan has been at the forefront of Texas blues-rock, and while he's calmed down some with age, he remains a vital, classy guitarist – even on the weaker material, his tasteful solos are utterly engaging. It's too bad that his material doesn't always match his skills, but there's enough straight-ahead, enjoyable music here to make it worth a listen.

If anyone deserves a crack at being "the next Stevie Ray Vaughan," it's his older brother Jimmie. Thankfully, he's not concerned with aping his sibling's gruff, guitar-heavy approach, as he's proved through his previous two solo albums. It's not that he doesn't have the chops to be an often spellbinding guitarist in his own right; his work with the Fabulous Thunderbirds proved that he could tear off hot licks with the best of them. But on his third solo album, Jimmie pulls even further away from his brother's sound, whipping up a scrumptious concoction of jazzy, often funky R&B and blues that's every bit as enticing in its own way as Stevie Ray's more bombastic approach was. Recorded in both Memphis and Texas and prominently featuring the amazing Bill Willis on Hammond B-3 (who doubles on bass pedals – leaving this as one of the few blues albums without an official bassist), Jimmie's more subtle approach leaves lots of spaces to nail a groove that gets deeper as the album progresses. Guests like James Cotton on harp and longtime associate singer Lou Ann Barton (who just about steals the show on the songs where she duets with Vaughan) inject extra spice, but the singer/guitarist has crafted a compelling slice of contemporary blues that blends traditional elements in a distinctive way. His own soloing stings in a less abrasive, more organic fashion, and his honest, lived-in vocals, while not technically accomplished, fit the tunes perfectly. Rootsy yet polished tracks like the R&B swamp of "Without You" and the Texas soul of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "In the Middle of the Night" (featuring Stevie Ray's Double Trouble rhythm section) crackle with taut energy and low-down soul. By forging an individual musical style, Jimmie Vaughan not only avoids all Stevie Ray comparisons, but has produced a remarkable album that truly sounds like no one else.

Some tribute projects to earlier greats seek to modernize and update their music. This project, co-led by singer Omar Kent Dykes and guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, instead focuses on revitalizing the music of Jimmy Reed in traditional settings. While not closely copying the original recordings, these new renditions are very much "in the tradition." With his deep and low voice, Dykes does justice to the lyrics and feelings in the music; Vaughan has plenty of fine guitar solos; and the guest spots of singer Lou Ann Barton and either Kim Wilson, James Cotton, Gary Primich, or Delbert McClinton on harmonica add to both the variety and the power of the music. As with the best tribute projects, this one will send listeners back to Jimmy Reed's original records while also standing by itself as a heartfelt and relevant homage to the great bluesman.

With the Fabulous Thunderbirds, guitarist Jimmie Vaughan became one of the architects of the '70s Austin blues scene. He was, and remains, a concise stringbender whose trebly, staccato solos service the song, never extending past their natural quitting point. The guitarist's solo albums maintained that approach and even refined it, letting a few notes do the talking where others in his frontman status might have tended toward a more spotlight-stealing attack. His supporting work backing Omar Kent Dykes on two sets of Jimmy Reed covers released in 2007 and 2009 further reinforced that style and this, his first solo set in nine years – and only his fourth overall – continues the trend. There is just one original, the hopped-up instrumental "Comin' and Goin'," but Vaughan has dug deep to excavate cool obscurities that fit his less aggressive but crackling technique. Old friend Lou Ann Barton guests to add her sexy scotch-and-soda vocals on four of the 13 tracks, arguably the disc's highlights. Vaughan also employs horns on the majority of the selections, which brings a jazzy feel to the R&B that dominates this set. His voice won't win any awards, but Vaughan puts across the tunes with a sympathetic swagger entirely in keeping with his tasty guitar solos. He revisits the Jimmy Reed songbook once more for "Come Love," also his lone harp performance here. It's a real find and a terrific duet vehicle for him and Barton in a swinging version that makes you wonder why it hasn't been covered more often. There's plenty of jump blues such as Roy Milton's "RM Blues" and especially "(She's Got The) Blues for Sale," best known by Billy Eckstine, that allows the horns to shine while leaving room for Vaughan's jazzy guitar runs. The titular ballads also change the pace with a smooth version of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" (sung by keyboardist Bill Willis), the swaggering, blues-drenched '50s standard "Wheel of Fortune," and a supercharged run-through of Little Richard's "Send Me Some Lovin'," the latter two featuring Barton's tough/tender singing. Vaughan fans will find this to be a welcome entry to his rather slim solo catalog and most blues lovers will appreciate that the guitarist's sheer comfort level and easy-rolling interpretations of these songs make him a veteran whose best days might be ahead of him.

"If at first you succeed, do it again," seems to be Austin blues/R&B guitarist Jimmie Vaughan's motto, as he returns to the well that provided a hit for him only a year before this second volume's release. Since it took nearly nine years between albums before this, it's obvious that both the acceptance of the last set, and its concept, were something that resonated with him enough to bring the same band back for another batch of covers of cool obscurities from the past. Recording in mono – oddly not noted on the sleeve notes – and live in the studio provides a batch of hot-wired, energized performances that do justice to songs that were likely originally recorded under similar circumstances five or six decades ago. Only the most obsessive of blues fans will recognize some of the artists such as Jivin' Gene, Teddy Humphries, and Annie Laurie who first recorded these minor gems, let alone the songs themselves. Vaughan digs deep to unearth seldom heard, let alone covered, tracks associated with better-known figures like Ray Charles, Jimmy Liggins, and Hank Williams, Sr. He also revives another Jimmy Reed cover, "I'm a Love You," something he has been obsessed with after recording two albums of the bluesman's material riding shotgun to Omar Kent Dykes. Once again, Lou Ann Barton jumps on board to add her distinctive Southern voice in duet settings and even gets her picture on the cover, even though she only contributes to three tracks, one less than last time. A two-man horn section of saxists Doug James and Greg Piccolo, both ex-Roomful of Blues, brings the jump blues titles into full swing. Vaughan keeps his typically clipped solos sharp and punchy, using his instrument to punctuate rather than drive the attack. It sounds as loose and animated as studio sessions can be, with seemingly no overdubs to rob the music of its natural spontaneity. Liner notes explaining how Vaughan came in contact with, and was influenced by, these relatively lost gems would have gone a long way to help newcomers appreciate his motivation. Regardless, this remains a terrific, crackling listen and a great party album that sounds as rollicking in 2011 as it would have 50 years earlier.

Though he's has hundreds of credits since leaving the Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1987, Vaughan has released only six solo studio albums, and one, Family Style, was co-billed to younger brother Stevie Ray. His previous album, Jimmie Vaughan Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites, appeared in 2011. He's also made some notable guest appearances since then, adding his inimitable guitar style to albums by Nick Lowe, Duke Robillard, Gov't Mule, and Sue Foley.

Issued by the U.K.'s Last Music Co. Baby, Please Come Home is another set of less-than-obvious covers drawn from the dusty shelves of vintage jump blues and R&B shuffles, rockabilly, doo wop, and country music. All are reworked in his hard-swinging back-to-basics style, delivered with raw passion as well as economy, his razor-blade six-string acting as a guidepost rather than driving force. The set was cut in mono mostly at the Fire Station in San Marcos, Texas, except for a couple of tracks captured live in Austin. Vaughan's cast comprises alternating groups of veteran friends. The title-track opener by Lloyd Price is a big, rowdy groover with Vaughan's pointy leads going right at the strolling horn section, with his grainy baritone shouting over the top. The snare and cymbal shuffle and walking bassline support his solo, while ex-Roomful of Blues' saxman Greg Piccolo wails on tenor. After "Just a Game," a slippery Louisiana soul-blues penned by the "Crazy Cajun" Huey P. Meaux, Vaughan reinvents Lefty Frizzell's countrified doo wop number "No One to Talk To (But the Blues)," as a wailing, jump blues shouter, with the horns fighting his vocal for dominance. It wouldn’t be a Vaughan record without at least one tune by idol and fellow Texas bluesman T-Bone Walker, and here's it's the uncharacteristically lush, slow jazz-blues "I’m Still in Love with You" featuring upright bass, piano, muted trumpet, and Mike Flanigin's B-3. It's the guitarist's finest vocal performance on the record, and that's saying something since Vaughan’s singing has only gotten better with age. Richard Berry's ("Louie Louie") "Be My Lovey Dovey" alternates between razor-wire guitar fills and a swinging chorus with handclaps provided by backing vocalists Emily Gimble and Georgia Bramhall. The fat baritone sax solo on Fats Domino's and Dave Bartholomew's fingerpopping "I’m Glad" is capped by Vaughan delivering a meaty, grits-and-gravy acoustic solo. The closer is a live read of Jimmy Reed's "Baby, What's Wrong," winding Vaughan's playing history back to his beginnings. The punchy strut of Flanigin's B-3 is matched only by the guitarist's passionate vocal and meaty, fleet-fingered playing. The track sends Baby, Please Come Home off on a house-rocking note. As usual, Vaughan completely ignores modern electric blues trends. On this excellent slab of grease, grit, and soul, past is present is future, thank goodness.
