    This is Reger at his most accessible. In both pieces there is plenty of atmosphere and colour. The Hiller Variations is possibly his greatest and most satisfying orchestral work and is indispensable. Reger was a prolific composer, and it has to be said not all that came from his pen was necessarily memorable. However, the two works on this disc are vintage Reger. He lived his short life as fast as he composed his music. His is a special and unique sound-world which offers great rewards to those who take the time to explore it. Radiant playing from the Concertgebouw under Jarvi and sound to match.

    Both the comparative versions listed above are very good and can still be safely recommended especially to the real Reger enthusiast, since each contains a comparative rarity as fill-up: Sir Colin Davis's account of the Hiller Variations (on Orfeo) is coupled with Reger's Eine Ballettsuite Op. 130, Gerd Albrecht's reading (Schwann Musica Mundi/Koch International) of the Zier Tondichtungen nach Arnold Bocklin with Eine romantische Suite, Op. 125. For the more general listener, though, Jarvi has a great deal to offer (and if his performances should convert general listeners into enthusiasts, which seems likely, I don't suppose that Chandos need me to tell them that the two suites would make a good coupling for Reger's Mozart Variations, so far absent from the domestic CD catalogue).

    Jarvi's orchestra is the finest of the three (not that Albrecht's or especially Davis's are put in the shade by the comparison) and they probably know this repertory less well than the Bavarians or the Berliners—and I mean that as a compliment: they play as though delighted by the discoveries they are making. It isn't only their eagerness, though, that makes the Bocklin Symphonic Poems sound rather fresher and more cogent than they do in Albrecht's hands. A sense of pacing is one of Jarvi's greatest gifts in late romantic music and it is just what ''The isle of the dead'' (the third of the four Poems) needs if it is not to sound static, which to a slight degree it does in Albrecht's reading. Even the meditative and very beautiful ''The Hermit playing the violin'' (the first Poem of the cycle, a strange but impressive combination of Pfitzner-like nobility and Vaughan Williams in his Tallis Fantasia manner) can respond to a touch of expressive urgency, Jarvi demonstrates, and in the two quicker movements of the set (''Play of the waves'' and ''Bacchanal''; the latter is the odd man out of the four—rather a dull piece) he finds more crispness and a wider palette of colour than Albrecht does. The Chandos recording, too, is wider in dynamic range and cleaner in heavier passages than the Schwann.

    In the Hiller Variations Davis seems to me to have an occasional slight edge over Jarvi: a bit more charm to the ravishingly scored second variation, a lighter touch in the heavy-featured minuet of the sixth. But in the all-important business of clarifying the rich detail and formidable ingenuity of Reger's polychrome counterpoint Jarvi puts not a foot wrong, and the cumulative power of the work (pacing again) is most satisfying. Again, the recording balances dean detail with sumptuousness and (no minor point in a work of such colossal dimensions) Chandos provide cueing bands for each variation; Orfeo, whose recording is otherwise very fine, supply none.

    Strongly recommended, especially to those who think they don't like Reger; how could anyone not like ''The Hermit playing the violin'', or not respond to the Variations' breathtaking encyclopedia of orchestral resource?
