Detroit-born blues and soul singer known for her passionate phrasing and vocal delivery.

Blues and soul singer Janiva Magness was no stranger to trouble and hard times growing up, and at her best, she pours that lifetime of emotion into her passionate phrasing and vocal delivery. Born in Detroit, Magness grew up with her father's blues and country record collection, as well as the city's wonderful Motown pop-soul sound, all of which shaped her style and approach as a musician. She lost both of her parents to suicide while in her early teens, and she ended up living on the streets, channeled through endless foster homes, before becoming pregnant at the age of 17 and being forced to give up the child for adoption.

Her personal and creative redemption came at an Otis Rush show in Minneapolis. Discouraged, stressed, and definitely underage, Magness snuck into the club and was transformed by Rush's performance. That was the moment, Magness maintains, that her vision of herself as a singer and musician began to take shape. She started out as a background singer, finally ending up in Phoenix in the early '80s, where she formed the Mojomatics, a popular local band. Magness next relocated to Los Angeles in 1986. A debut cassette, More Than Live, appeared in the mid-'90s, with her first CD, It Takes One to Know One, appearing in 1996, followed by three more independent releases. Magness signed with NorthernBlues Music and Bury Him at the Crossroads was issued by the label in 2004, with Do I Move You? following two years later in 2006.

Magness began to draw a lot of critical and fan attention, particularly in the blues community, and her career was in full swing, garnering an armful of blues awards. She signed with Alligator Records in 2008, which issued What Love Will Do that same year, following it with The Devil Is an Angel Too in 2010 and Stronger for It in 2012. Original, which featured a dozen original Magness songs, appeared from her own Fat Head Records imprint in 2014. Pairing with Blue Élan Records to increase Fat Head's distribution, she delivered Love Wins Again, a confident and soulful meditation on the power of love, in early 2016. The following year saw the release of an EP, Blue Again. The full-length album Love Is an Army arrived in 2018.

It's a long way from Michigan to the West Coast, but Janiva Magness didn't lose a bit of that great Detroit R&B influence when she made the trip. She gained a dedicated, ardent fan base in the L.A. area and she enlisted some of the area's finest for this one. Kirk Fletcher and Kid Ramos tear it up on guitar. Songwriter Jeff Turmes plays bass and contributes some fine songs, particularly the slow smoker "The More I Keep on Losin'." Brother Red Young lays down some greasy B3, especially on the Ray Charles/Percy Mayfield tune "Tell Me How Do You Feel." And Magness is a little powerhouse throughout, just as comfortable shifting from Ruth Brown to James Brown. Fun stuff.

This is without question the best CD from Janiva Magness. Her voice has always been great, but on previous albums, we've had to listen to guest vocalists on a few songs. This CD is all Janiva, and that is good news. She easily handles the up-tempo tracks such as Blus Ain't Pretty and I'm Gonna Play The Honky Tonks as well as the slow, sad, and mellow songs like I Don't Know and St. Gabriel. In addition, the lead guitars and rythm section complement her nicely. This is a very enjoyable blues CD.

It would have been natural for soul/roots vocalist Magness to capitalize on the success of her 2008 Alligator debut by shifting toward a more commercial middle ground for the follow-up two years later. While she hasn't changed direction drastically, it's encouraging that Magness finds under-the-radar material to wrap her husky voice around. Those somewhat unlikely sources for torchy songs include gems from Nick Lowe and Julie Miller. The latter provides the title track, setting the album's philosophical tone by examining both the angelic and demonic sides of human nature. That theme weaves through the disc on stirring, often rousing covers of tunes made famous, or at least introduced to Magness, by Graham Parker ("I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," perhaps better-known to R&B fans through Ann Peebles' classic performance), Percy Sledge ("Walkin' in the Sun"), Marvin Gaye ("End of Our Road"), and Joe Tex (the often covered but rarely impressive "I Want to Do Everything for You"). She also revisits the Nina Simone well. Simone is a logical source since the singer's eclectic song choices seem to be an inspiration for Magness' own approach. Here she dusts off and breathes new life into the Bricusse/Newley standard "Feeling Good" (incorrectly listed as "I'm Feelin' Good"). The disc's wide stylistic range flows together effortlessly with Magness' broad, sultry, soulful vocals, unique arrangements, and a band that tugs at the heart of these songs, delivering taut yet spacious performances. Many of the players return from her last outing with standout work from guitarist/co-producer Dave Darling. His swampy touch meshes with drummer Stephen Hodges' patented, rubbery thumping. The combination works flawlessly with the Memphis groove of "Playhouse," where Magness' powerful pipes bite into the song like a hungry wolf. She's just as effective on "Weeds Like Us," an ominous, deep Delta blues ballad written by husband/bassist/guitarist Jeff Turmes, who also contributes the closing, standard-styled "Turn Your Heart in My Direction." Magness connected with a definitive version of Gary Nicholson's "You Were Never Mine" a few albums ago, and finds another Nicholson gem in the aching gospel of "Save Me." These dozen songs barely break the 40-minute mark, allowing the singer to hit her targets and move on. Magness nails every performance, seamlessly shifting from dark to light. It's that dichotomy that brings the tension and release, edging her a little further from the typical R&B territory that is only a starting point for her dynamic talent.

Janiva Magness hasn't recorded any of her own compositions since she cut "Good Car" on It Takes One to Know One, her 1997 debut. Here she makes up for lost time with three compelling co-writes with producer David Darling. The tunes are some of the most potent on an album with no shortage of powerful material. There's a hint of Stax in the arrangement of "There It Is," the nasty kiss-off that opens the set. Darling's gritty guitar and Matt Teco's drums provide an ominous stomping rhythm to set off Magness' snarling vocal. When she sings, "I never thought I'd wanna hurt a man so bad," it sends chills down your spine. "I Won't Cry" visits the same heartbroken territory, but with a quiet intensity. Magness dips into her throaty mid-range to profess, "I get cut and I might bleed, but I won't cry." It's a great tag line supported by Darling's simmering lead and haunting B-3 by Arlan Oscar. "Whistling in the Dark" delivers more simmering Southern soul as Magness delivers the tale of a long-suffering spouse who knows the truth, but is unable to leave the relationship. The rest of the program is made up of her usual selection of well-chosen covers. "Make It Rain" from Tom Waits' Real Gone album is transformed into an old-time blues with Magness and Darling's guitar engaging a lively call and response. Magness shows off her range here, slipping from her growling mid-range up to a sorrowful shriek. On most of the album, she displays a muted, simmering side, delivering the bad news with understated intensity. Ike Turner's "You Got What You Wanted" uses a funky New Orleans rhythm to support a vocal that flips between rage and resignation. Grace Potter's "Ragged Company" is a quiet, introspective look at life's unpleasant truths, and Gladys Knight's "I Don't Wanna Do Wrong" is a slow, sexy R&B burner that delves into the dark allure of infidelity with a sinister groove and Magness delivering one of her most wrenching vocals. The album closes with Ray Wylie Hubbard's "Whoop and Holler," a gospel song that lives up to its title with the band supplying unrestrained whoops and handclaps to support Magness' jubilant vocal.

Janiva Magness saw her share of hard times growing up in Detroit, losing both of her parents to suicide when she was in her early teens, and she ending up living on the streets when she wasn't being shuffled through endless foster homes; then pregnant at 17, she was forced to give up her baby for adoption. When she discovered the blues at an Otis Rush show, it wasn't hard for her to recognize what the blues was and how it spoke to her. Blessed with a sultry voice and a natural understanding of emotional nuance and phrasing, and with a good deal of that Motown R&B in her natural fiber, she developed into a striking blues, R&B, and soul singer, releasing several albums of blues, R&B, and Americana, including several with Alligator Records between 2008 and 2012. Then things unraveled once again for Magness. Her long-running marriage to songwriter Jeff Turmes fell apart, eight of her friends and relatives died, including the one foster mother who had encouraged her singing, and Magness herself underwent an operation for a serious neck injury that left her unable to sing for a time. She had also left Alligator Records. All of this travail feeds directly into Original, the album where Magness steps fully into her own, co-writing eight of the 11 songs, and revealing herself as an intelligent and emotionally relentless singer and writer with some stories to tell. The opener, "Let Me Breathe," is full of a suffocating and passionate honesty, an intimate shuffle that is part R&B, part gospel, and part confession. The same sort of open-hearted examination of mistakes, wrong turns, and attempts at redemption flows through these songs, particularly in the deep blues of "When You Were My King," the gospel-tinged ballad "Mountain," and the gentle, intimate "Standing," which closes the set out. Magness takes things upbeat here, too, particularly in the joyous, sassy strut and stomp of "I Need a Man." This is easily her best album, mostly for the heartbreaking exactness of her writing, which allows her amazing voice to live and breathe from inside her own emotional life and find its own artistry.
