Both works on this the third volume in Koch’s superb series of Rozsa’s orchestral music were inspired by suggestions from the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, the Op. 29 (1966) being a direct commission for a double concerto for himself and Jascha Heifetz. Despite having to juggle with the temperamental demands of his two eminent soloists, both of whom would object if the spotlight seemed to be favouring one instrument more than the other (which probably explains why Rozsa reduced the piece by over ten minutes following its poorly received premiere in Chicago under Jean Martinon), the resulting showcase, with its passionate opening movement and highly rhythmic finale, is further evidence of the composer’s abiding affection for his native Hungary. The middle movement, an accomplished theme and variations, was actually the first section to be completed and was premiered and recorded by Piatigorsky and Heifetz with reduced orchestration as Op. 29a in 1963 (RCA, 4/89). Here, Boch and Gruppman capture the Sinfonia’s rhapsodic intensity with panache, supported (as in both works) by the confident direction of James Sedares and Koch’s customary solid acoustic.
The ardent Viola Concerto, Rozsa’s final work for full orchestra, was prompted by Piatigorsky’s praise for Pinchas Zukerman. However, several film commitments delayed its completion by four years, with another five passing before Zukerman was able to introduce the piece under the helm of Andre Previn in Pittsburgh in 1984. The composer’s surging, darkly romantic fervour is well suited to the viola and is communicated with due warmth here by Paul Silverthorne.
