    Progressive Rock, Folk

Jake Jones (whoever knows to whom this name refered to?) was a short-lived American band from St. Louis, Missouri, which put out two albums in 1971, a self-titled one with strong psychedelic and folk leanings, and a second one during the same year, titled ''Different roads'' and being the most progressive of the pair, both were released during the fading days of the American label Kapp Records. The band comprised of Mike Krenski on bass/vocals, Joe Marshall on guitar/vocals, drummer James Ovid Bilderback, lead singer and flutist Chuck Sabatino and Phil Jost, a true multi-instrumentalist, playing guitars, keyboards, flute, sax and accordion.

Unlike the hillarious, commercial cover with the five members posing on a truck, the music on ''Different roads'' have some good things to offer to the listener and actually some of the displayed instrumental ideas are ahead of their time.Still you should be warned that the short tracks have nothing to do with Prog Rock, they sound like period pieces with multi-vocal harmonies, Psych-Pop tendencies, structures and choruses and a fair dose of rural influences, basically based on the secure electroacoustic guitars/piano combinations.Nothing to get excited about, not bad either, just so ordinary music you think you have listened to it a from as many as a hundred different bands. On the other side there is some stylistical variety and mood for intricate musicianship in the longer pieces.''A suite from the court jester'' comes up as a pretty enganging piece of US Proto-Prog with multiple variations and a nice mixture between theatrical and dramatic sections, propelled by the multiple themes and offering light Classical influences, Psych/Folk colors and poetic Rock endeavors with great work on piano and organ.''Speak to me lady'' sounds pretty cheesy of a title and the lyrics are maybe too syrupy, but the music is decent with some evident YES hints, loads of flute and piano and rough electric guitars.''It's only love you know'' is a great Psych/Art Rocker in the vein of PROCOL HARUM with emotional vocal lines and very sensitive guitar and organ in a Psych/Classical mode, while the title-track is a full-blown prog manifest, introducing synths to the sound of the band, featuring great and dynamic interplays and some impressive tempo changes. It reminds me a bit of CRESSIDA, JETHRO TULL and MARSUPILAMI with the devastating alternations between fast and slow tempos and the great atmospheric depth.

After several lives, some of them were alongside Rock legends The Eagles, Jake Jones disbanded in 1973, even if they had a third, never released album ready for launching.Sabatino and Marshall played until late-70's with the band A Full Moon Consort.Unfortunately both passed away, Sabatino died in 1996 at the age of 45, after a 94' stroke, who left him paralyzed, while Marshall left this world in 2014 due to Parkinson disease.Jost moved to Los Angeles in late-70's and became an assistant of producer/sound engineer Ken Scott.

Uneven attempt on rural Psych/Prog with plenty of 60's leftovers.I wouldn't actually recommended this one to serious lovers of Prog music, but a couple of pieces like the intense and complex title track or the 10-min. long ''A suite from the court jester'' are good examples of what US had to offer to an emerging genre at the time and deserve a few spins.
