    Für Opernproduktionen mit einer grandiosen szenischen Umsetzung ist das der Härtetest: Funktionieren sie auch ohne Optik? Teilt sich ihre Magie auch ohne die bilderwelt, den Erfindungsreichtum des Regisseurs und die Präsenz der Sänger mit?
    Kein Problem im Falle des Münchner 'Ariodante'. Der CD-Mitschnitt, quasi der "Soundtrack" aus der Aufführungsserie im Januar 2000, ist ein Glücksfall fürs Händel-Repertoire. Zumal auch die Tontechniker die Live-Atmosphäre eingefangen und eine nahezu perfekte Balance zwischen Bühne und Graben hergestellt haben. … Fast mühelos können sich Dirigent Ivor Bolton und das Staatsorchester neben britischen Edel-Ensembles behaupten. Bolton, kein Freund der ruppig-kantigen Akzentuierung und vordergründiger Brillanz, bevorzugt einen sehr federnden Klang. Vitalität verbindet sich hier mit einer weichen, swingenden Phrasierung. Und davon profitieren vor allem die Sänger: Sie werden nicht in das Korsett einer stählernen Agogik gezwängt, sondern können sich und ihre Stimmen frei entfalten. Interessant dabei ist, und dies kommt auf der CD noch stärker heraus, dass im Nationaltheater für heutige Barock-Ideale eher untypische Solisten zu hören waren. Ann Murray (Ariodante), Joan Rodgers (Ginevra), auch Christopher Robson (Polinesso) verfügen zwar über geläufige, aber groß dimensionierte Stimmen. Das bringt einen Zugewinn an Dramatik und Spannung – und den Hörer ins Grübeln: Sollte also die blutarme Eleganz anderer Kollegen doch nicht zu Händels praller Opernwelt passen?"
