A CD of the Bamberger Symphoniker, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, was recently released, featuring works by Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-1963) and Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975). The pairing of these works will not be a coincidence, because both composers were not only friends, but they also shared a number of characteristics, such as the proclamation of humane ideals and the pursuit of expressiveness. Perhaps their only point of contention was the twelve-tone technique, which Hartmann didn't like, while Dallapiccola was intensively involved with it. The "Canti di liberazione" (1955), which are based, among other things, on texts from the biblical book Exodus and the Confessiones of Augustine, show that this rather academic technique did not hinder Dallapiccola in writing particularly beautiful and expressive music. "Miserae" (1933/34) was Hartmann's first orchestral piece. This symphonic poem originated in the early years of the Nazi regime and was dedicated to the first victims in the concentration camps. The "Gesangszene" for baritone and orchestra from 1963 is based on excerpts from the drama "Sodome et Gomorrha" by Jean Giraudoux. Hartmann presented a number of excerpts from this text, guided by his concerns about the survival of human civilization and his fears about the nuclear arms race.
