In Flames - Lunar Strain / Subterranean (1994-1995) [Reissue 2021]

In Flames debut album, Lunar Strain, has often been likened to Black Metal and Goth, which is understandable in some ways (Mikael Stanne's croak and the slower, moodier riffs laced with keyboards,) but the fact is, this was just a varied though somewhat disjointed first attempt at creating their sound.
Rooted in Power Metal more than anything, Lunar Strain kicks off with Behind Space, the albums most concise, aggressive song. A great folk melody ends Space and we move on through the title track, Starforsaken, and Dreamscape, of which the first two are fine examples of this album's merit, though the latter is my least favorite from this record. On to the apex of the album, the two parter, Everlost. Part 1, with its slow, melodic, mournful sound, segues nicely into part 2, which features serene female vocals over Stromblad's beautiful acoustic playing (folk music was his aim when he started In Flames, and this album showcases that quite well.) Hargalaten, a traditional Swedish folk song, all violins, maintains the high level of quality. The band's name-sake, In Flames, rounds out the best this album has to offer as the final two tracks are slightly derivative.
The follow up EP, Subterranean, reveals the band shedding its darkest tendencies for a brighter Power Metal persona. Stand Ablaze, the finest number here, fleshes out the melodic death sound the band attained. Through out, In Flames seems content to reach a new level, though the other songs could have been polished a bit. Two bonus tracks round this reissue out, demo versions of Dead Eternity and Dead God In Me (known as The Inborn Lifeless here,) both from The Jester Race.
While it is evident that In Flames was still getting it together at this point, Lunar Strain/Subterranean is undeniably groundbreaking for it's time along with early works from Dark Tranquility. Stromblad and company would, however, find the missing pieces they needed and matured their approach for their timeless masterpiece, The Jester Race.
