Australian new wave rockers known best for their '80s hits "Crazy" and "Electric Blue." Though it has had varying personnel, Icehouse was essentially a vehicle for the work of Australian Iva Davies. Davies formed the first version of the band under the name Flowers in 1980 and began scoring hits in Australia with the group's first single, "Can't Help Myself." (Icehouse was the name of Flowers' first album, but the group changed its name as it went international, to avoid conflicts with another band.) They first reached the U.S. charts in 1981 with "We Can Get Together" but did not score a substantial hit until 1988's "Crazy." This was followed by the Top Ten hit "Electric Blue," written by John Oates.

Icehouse is the debut album released by Australian rock/synthpop band Flowers, later known as Icehouse, on the independent label Regular Records in October 1980. The title and the artist are sometimes incorrectly swapped, because the band changed their name from Flowers into Icehouse after this album was released. Containing the Top 20 Australian hits "Can't Help Myself", "We Can Get Together" and "Walls"; the album made heavy use of synthesisers, which would continue to be used throughout the band's career. Founder Iva Davies wrote all the tracks including four co-written with keyboardist Michael Hoste, however Hoste was replaced during recording sessions by Anthony Smith. In October 2010, Icehouse (1980) by Flowers was listed in the book, 100 Best Australian Albums. Remastered reissue includes three bonus tracks, 'Love In Motion (Original Single Mix), 'Goodnight, Mr. Matthews' (B side to Love In Motion) & 'Can't Help Myself' (Original 10 Inch Single Mix).

Review

FLOWERS (the original name of the band to become Icehouse) is an overlooked classic that fused guitar pop with postpunk and new wave/synthpop (even glam) back in 1980 – one of the strongest debuts from down under ever. "We Can Get Together", "Walls", "Can't Help Myself" and "Icehouse" are all classic singles from the album. This remastered edition adds 3 more bonus tracks to the 3 bonus tracks that were featured on the initial CD release (really 6 bonus tracks).

My only complaint is that the production on this album is disappointingly tinny-sounding and the mixing is weak. This album was released in 1981 in the U.S. in a remixed form with what sounds like re-recorded vocals, and this version sounds far superior in my opinion. Unfortunately, the U.S. version is long out of print on CD (well worth seeking out) and will likely never be reissued in a remastered form. Still, this is a classic early 80's album. Why the original Icehouse line-up disbanded after this album is a mystery to me. (Lead singer Iva Davies established a new lineup after effectively recording the 2nd album, PRIMITIVE MAN, all by himself!)

As an oboe/guitar player involved in electro popular music, it's no surprise Iva Davies took to Roxy Music, especially on "Street Café" and the mega-hit "Hey Little Girl," which duly landed in no less than 13 European Top Ten singles charts, going all the way in Switzerland. An album of atmospheres, "Great Southern Land" evokes images of Australia's arid interior, while "Trojan Blue" conjures up medieval Italy or France. "Mysterious Thing" continues Primitive Man's mood, and produces what may be the best line in ambient white funk recorded! Running orders for the album fluctuate; Australian editions swapped "Love in Motion" for the rockier "Break These Chains" (vice versa in the U.K.). Finishing up is an excellent reworking of "Goodnight Mr. Mathews," which had earlier appeared on the Steve Nye single-only version of "Love in Motion" (itself re-recorded less successfully). Primitive Man (aka Love in Motion in the U.K.) is still one his finest recordings. Those seeking out the CD are also blessed with the inclusion of "Over the Line," hitherto only available on Fresco and the singles box set, the original 12" of "Girl," and the German version of "Uniform."

Sidewalk is the third studio album by the Australian rock band Icehouse. It was originally released in June 1984, on the labels Regular, Chrysalis, and reached #8 on the National albums chart with singles "Taking the Town" (#22), "Don't Believe Anymore" (#22t) and "Dusty Pages" (#82). Founding member Iva Davies used the Fairlight CMI digital sampling synthesizer on this more sombre and reflective album, included are two tracks used for the Russell Mulcahy 1984 film Razorback, which he had recorded in 1983.

Like many Americans, I was introduced to Icehouse through their 1987 album Man of Colours and its big hit singles (Crazy and Electric Blue). It wasn't until recently that I first heard its predecessor, Measure for Measure, in its entirety, and what a pleasant surprise it was! For one thing, it's better than Man of Colours by a good stretch. And what is more, despite having some of the worst cover art in history, it is, musically, one of the best synth-rock albums of the 80s. The opening track, Paradise, builds slowly and beautifully, while the more familiar No Promises and Cross the Border stand the test of time. Some of the keyboard sounds on Measure for Measure even remind me of Rush's albums from the same era, particularly Power Windows. The biggest surprise for me was the majestic anthem The Flame, an anti-apartheid song in the vein of Peter Gabriel's Biko, Simple Minds' Mandela Day, and U2's Silver and Gold. This one outshines them all, especially the live version included as a bonus track.

Measure for Measure isn't a kitschy, campy 80s album (ok, Lucky Me and Baby, You're So Strange are a bit of both). Rather, it is representative of the best that decade had to offer. Brian Eno's presence (not as producer but as a full-fledged band member contributing keyboards and vocals) certainly contributes to this album's success. Around the time Measure for Measure was released, Eno was also working with Daniel Lanois producing U2's Joshua Tree. While his work with U2 will always receive more recognition, his collaboration with Iva Davies and Icehouse shouldn't be overlooked. It's a great album.

Based on the principles of balance, Measure for Measure is half-produced by David Lord, half by Rhett Davies. American and European editions benefit from a better track list, which opens with the Davies-produced "No Promises." A little too close to Bowie and Metheny's "This Is Not America," perhaps, but very nice all the same. "Cross the Border" resembles and continues the close relationship with Simple Minds, and features a strong Brian Eno back vocal motif. Another of the RD-produced pieces, "The Flame," although about the struggles in South Africa, opens with a watery, orient-like synth treatment before a strong beat, courtesy of Steve Jansen, and a Talk Talk-sounding synth take charge. Newer realms are visited by Spanish guitar on "Angel Street," but the Bowie references can't be shaken, with much of the later part relying on squally glam rock ("Regular Boys" and the career-reviving "Baby You're So Strange"). Had the color of bonus CD cuts "Too Late Now" (a definitive Icehouse sound) and "Into the Wild" been included, how different things might have been. A few blocks up from the bland Sidewalk but a few buildings short of Man of Colours.

Includes 5 bonus tracks 'Shakin' the Cage', 'Over My Head', 'Touch The Fire', 'Jimmy dean' & 'Electric Blue' (Extended Mix). With US chart success for "Crazy", which reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 on its Mainstream Rock chart, and "Electric Blue" (#7 Hot 100, #10 Mainstream), the album Man of Colours reached #43 on the Billboard 200.

Review

Early morning, sun rising on Sidney seen through the shades of a window in a radio station transmition booth. A DJ talks to his listeners and takes a request from a female voice on the phone: "Can you play 'Crazy' for me?" This is how the video of Icehouse's "Crazy" started, back in 1987, the year Australian band put out this (in my opinion, their best) album: 'Man of Colours', and the DJ was no one else but lead singer Iva Davies.

The entire album is a solid collection of late eighties material from the band that is firmly entrenched in the same vein as other bands of their time, such as INXS, Midnight Oil and, to a certain extent, even U2. Though "Crazy" will always live in my mind as a song that I will always remember 1987 for, the rest of the album is packed with great works, such as "Electric Blue", the title track and "Kingdom". To complement it, this remastered edition comes packed with extra tracks of remixes of the other songs. In particular, the midnight mix of "Crazy" is the 'background' music that was playing in the beginning of the song's video, before the actual song kicked in, and it's one hell of a song to begin the day!

Overall: go, don't walk -run to get a copy of this album!

Review

This is not perhaps the most commercial of the Icehouse albums, but it's still Iva Davies, and it's still great music. True fans will appreciate the additional range of styles that Iva explores on this album, and enjoy it for what it is: another piece of work by an amazingly talented artist, although probably more experimental than some of the more successful albums. He explores a number of styles that haven't been found on his other, more homogenous albums, and I think that's why this one didn't score well with the punters. It's a collection of very different tracks and maybe the average listener wasn't ready for that.

I own almost all of Iva's albums now, but hadn't got around to listening to Code Blue until recently. After all it's the black sheep of his catalogue, and had little commercial success. I don't recall hearing even one single off it. However I figured it was time I completed my collection and came here to buy it. There were a few reviews here that basically said "you couldn't pay me to buy this album" but I figured anyone who hadn't really listened to it probably wasn't in a position to write a proper review anyway. So as a genuine fan I decided to give it a go and see what this album had to offer. And the answer is - it's an interesting piece of work that grows on you as you listen.

Sure, it's not "Man of Colours", but in many ways it's got more soul. I think these are songs Iva had to get out of his system. They sound like ones that meant something to him personally, and let's face it - you don't *have* to be able to dance to everything you hear.

For those who are looking for a real rocking sound that is definitively Icehouse, I can highly recommend "Knockin 'Em Down", a punchy dance track with a wicked chorus about a boy from the streets who becomes a boxer who just won't quit.

"The Great Divide" is an excellent track which somehow feels a bit like a follow up to "Great Southern Land" - it's more upbeat and more intense, but there are certain sympathies in the music and lyrics.

"Wind and Sail" is a departure from the norm which shows more of Iva's range. It has a distinctive Scottish flavour to it, and in parts it sounds more like Pink Floyd than Icehouse, but it's one of the standout tracks on the album with guitar riffs David Gilmour would be proud of, and Floyd-like choral work behind Iva's amazing voice (wow - that gives me an idea - imagine Iva fronting Pink Floyd!!).

"Big Fun" is a track that starts off fairly simple and repetitive and becomes increasingly more complex as it develops as Iva is clearly having a good time with it. He even drops in some "studio session" comments into the finished track as additional colour.

"Miracle Mile" is another classic Icehouse track. A great beat with some signature synth work on the base track.

"Jericho Bay" is a catchy tune that's classic Icehouse, but probably wasn't considered single material because it's about a woman leaving an abusive husband.

"Charlies Sky" is a really thoughtful track that also sounds like it was produced by Pink Floyd. Excellent stuff.

And then there's "Where the River meets the Sea" - which sounds a lot like a grown up and finished version of "Hey Little Girl". It's absolutely beautiful, and there are TWO versions of the track on the album so you can enjoy the soulful original demo track, or the more heavily produced final version. Two other tracks also have alternative mixes on the end of the album.

Altogether I'd recommend this album as a treasure of slightly-atypical gems from one of Australia's (and the world's) great artists.

This was Iva Davies return from courtroom hell with former label Chrysalis. Someone should annoy Davies more often, because the result is the most energizing, electric music of his career. From their opener, Icehouse – essentially the trio of Davies, Paul Wheeler, and David Chapman – treat us to a frenzy of guitars, loops, filmic links, and drumming likened to John Bonham. Though lyrically weak, the title song bounces along in jolly mode. Bowie affiliations come again in the form of "Satelite" and "Stolen Guitar." "Judas" and "Cadillac" are more stodgy but still rock; the latter is similar to the more recent Suede material. The album initially came with a computer disc – the first interactive disc in Australian rock history – while others came as standard with the Spin One EP attached, which leads nicely to its parent album.
