When he is remembered at all, Josef Bohuslav Foerster is remembered for one of two things: that he was the first person Mahler confided in when he finally figured out how to end his "Resurrection" Symphony in C minor or that he was the composer who wrote the conspicuously Mahlerian "Easter Eve" Symphony in C minor. As this Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm disc demonstrates, however, there was more to Foerster than that. These world-premiere recordings of the Czech composer's First Symphony in D minor and Second Symphony in F major with Hermann Bäumer leading the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra show that before he was writing like Mahler, Foerster was writing like Wagner. In both works, the developments' dramatic tone and the slow movements' lyrical ecstasy are all conspicuously indebted to the master of Bayreuth.
But like his later Mahlerian works, Foerster's earlier Wagnerian works are nevertheless well composed and deeply heartfelt works, and the orchestra and conductor do them the honor of giving them well-played and equally heartfelt performances. The winds, particularly the principal clarinet, and the brass, especially the first horn, are excellent, while the strings are smooth, strong, and supple. Bäumer clearly believes in Foerster, and his interpretations of the symphonies are clear-eyed but sympathetic. His structural control in the Second Symphony's expansive opening Allegro moderato is a good example of this balance between form and sentiment, and the rhythmic strength of the First Symphony's muscular closing Allegro energico is invigorating. Though Foerster may not altogether transcend his models, at least in these performances he still sounds like a more than competent and thoroughly enjoyable late Romantic composer. Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm's digital sound is a bit more distant than usual, but still clear, deep, and colorful.
