Cet oratorio postérieur au Messie passe pour avoir conservé les faveurs du public depuis sa création en 1747. Pourtant il n’existe actuellement que deux versions enregistrées disponibles, dont une seule sur instruments baroques. La sortie de cet enregistrement live de 2006, avec toute la technique la plus sophistiquée du moment, fait donc figure d’événement.
Heinz Ferlesch s’est entouré des forces vives de son ensemble Barruco et de la Wiener Singakademie. L’orchestre est généreux, surtout le continuo avec un superbe théorbe, mais c’est surtout le chœur qui s’impose, avec sa centaine de chanteurs. Les grandes fresques chorales sont donc superbement rendues avec de beaux moments de tension pianissimo. Le chœur d’entrée est de ce point de vue éloquent. La direction est avant tout efficace sans véritable vision d’ensemble, sans phrasés subtilement développés. Lecture qui peut sembler un peu prosaïque mais en somme, les héros (hormis Judas) sont anonymes et les plus beaux moments musicaux sont les airs et les duos dévolus à l’homme et à la femme du peuple d’Israël et bien évidemment les grands chœurs.
