Grimms' debut album was a live hodgepodge of straight pub rock, poetry, comedy sketches, and silliness that was a promising but uneven depiction of the state of British alternative comedy circa 1972. Released only months after their debut, the far superior studio album Rocking Duck is much more cohesive, experimental, and enjoyable. Zoot Money, whose songs fit awkwardly on the debut, is demoted to sideman status with the return of original member Andy Roberts (whose surname is the "R" in Grimms, alongside John Gorman, Neil Innes, Mike McGear, Roger McGough, and Viv Stanshall (who, as on the debut, is not actually a member of the group here). The addition of guitarist Ollie Halsall of Patto and Timebox fame is another key development, as he was instrumental to Neil Innes' next major project, the Rutles. Though Innes only wrote or co-wrote three songs – including the title track, a boogie-woogie homage to the large rubber duck he often wore on his head on-stage and in promo photos, which also appears on both album covers – he takes a more pronounced role as the group's musical director; the songs, like Roberts' extremely meta-country & western ballad "Songs of the Stars," and McGough's thumping "Oo-Chuck-A-Mao-Mao" are in the same vein of musical pastiche that the Bonzo Dog Band specialized in. The poetry readings and comedy segments are better integrated with each other, with callbacks to earlier bits and other intertextural gags worked into the spoken word pieces. A particular highlight is McGough's "FX," a playful story accompanied by sound effects that suggests a strong Goon Show influence. On their third and final album, Grimms would move further into straight pop music, but Rocking Duck has the best balance between their two styles
