    Sequel's Claudine/Still Together combines two albums Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded for Buddah in the early '70s on one compact disc. Each of these records has some bright spots, including hit singles, but they're too uneven to make this disc worthwhile for anyone outside of serious fans.

    The Claudine movie soundtrack sported the jammin' million-selling single "On and On" by Gladys Knight & the Pips. Written and produced by Curtis Mayfield and featured in the classic 1974 family drama starring Diahann Carroll, James Earl Jones, and Lawrence Hilton Jacobs (Welcome Back Kotter, Alien Nation, Cooley High), it parked at number two R&B for four weeks, going to number five Pop on Billboard's charts in 1974. Claudine is the least celebrated of songwriter/producer Mayfield's soundtrack albums (Superfly, Sparkle), though it's the most poignant of them. "Mr. Welfare Man" lays out the dehumanizing effect of being on welfare, while still being enticing and majestic in its dynamic arrangement. As much airplay as the track garnered, oddly it was never released as a single. "To Be Invisible" spoke to a child character's need to escape her depressing surroundings. Originally recorded by Mayfield on his Curtis LP, "The Makings of You" is a heart-tugging, strings-cushioned ballad that Knight sings wonderfully. Other LP tracks that received airplay are the upbeat, beautiful title track and the sweet "Make Yours a Happy Home," which curiously wasn't issued as a single until 1976. Claudine went gold, hitting number one on the R&B charts in summer 1974.

    When producer/songwriter Van McCoy worked with Gladys Knight & the Pips, he usually did well by the group. It was McCoy who wrote "Giving Up" and "Lovers Always Forgive," two of their best pre-Motown singles of the early 1960s - and he also proved to be an asset to Gladys Knight & the Pips when he co-produced their 1977 LP, Still Together. To his credit, he knew how to change with the times. His roots were doo wop and early soul, but by the mid-1970s, people associated him with disco thanks to the 1975 smash "The Hustle." So when McCoy was hired to produce Still Together, Knight didn't have to worry about sounding retro. But at the same time, no one would mistake this album for McCoy's club-oriented Disco Baby. Even though he gave the single "Baby Don't Change Your Mind" a certain amount of disco gloss, this is a soul LP first and foremost. Five of the eight songs on Still Together were co-produced (with Charles Kipps), arranged, and written or co-written by McCoy, including "Baby Don't Change Your Mind," the ballad "Walk Softly," and the sentimental "Home Is Where the Heart Is." A few of the selections are excellent, and the rest are at least decent. Still Together isn't among Knight's essential albums, but it's an enjoyable, if mildly uneven, effort that has more plusses than minuses.
