Friedhof were one of those obscure artists that popped up in Germany during the start of the 70s. They only released one album in their short existence, which saw the light of day in 1971. Wild and ferocious guitar wielding is what this album was all about, and to top it off the actual recording sounds like it was made in a dark and gloomy basement. The characteristics of this band are psychedelic hard-hitting jams, heavy rock with a slight nod to early metal legends such as Iommi and Blackmore, snippets of fusion and a dark chainsaw like Krautrock that is unsettling, unbridled and filled with fire. Their German name Friedhof furthermore translates into Graveyard, which adds another dimension to the bands gloomy and raw sound. One could easily imagine some kind of freak-out cemetery, where the air is packed with snarling wah wah guitars and long haired musicians jamming like crazies with death in their sight. Perhaps, but the music sure has a distinct personality and dangerous charm to it. The band consisted of Ernst-Ulrich Freitag on guitars, Norbert Schulz on bass/percussion and finally Rainer Bertl handled the drums. Although short-lived and under the radar, Friedhof should please heavy prog fans, seekers of early metal, fuzzy n' wild Krautrockers and those of us who seek soul and charisma in our music over production values.
