Francesco Cavalli’s musical production is dominated by his forty or so operas (some of which are still of doubtful authenticity). Cavalli’s apparent nonchalance no doubt helped to foster the legend of a person who seemed to be constantly hesitating between the security of a post at St Mark’s and the attraction of melodrama. Moreover, his functions as singer and organist in Venice did not stipulate that he was to compose religious music; his priveleged position at the basilica, which was synonymous with social success, nevertheless encouraged him to leave his mark. When he was appointed maestro di cappella on Rovetta’s death, he devoted himself to enriching a corpus of new music destined for the repertory of St Mark’s. While on this subject, we shall note that his most illustrious predecessors, Adriaan Willaert, Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, and Claudio Monteverdi, sensing that they did not have much longer to live, set to building up a legacy of religious music late in life: Willaert (who died in 1562) dit not publish his Musica nova until 1559 ; Andrea Gabrieli’s Concert were not published until 1587, a year after the composer’s death; the first book of Giovanni Gabrieli’s Sacrae sympboniae came off the press in 1597, and the second in 1615, three years after his death. The two most important collections of sacred works by Cavalli also date from the last months of their author’s existence. Granted, the Musiche sacre concernenti messa e salmi concertati date from 1656, but the Vesperi and probably the Missa pro defunctis per octo vocibus (the Requiem), date from 1675, i.e. the year before Cavalli’s death. This simple postulate thus substantiates the theory that the composer wanted to leave behind an important legacy that would become part of the Venetian patrimony […].– Martial Leroux
