Fern Kinney - Groove Me (1979) [2013, Remastered & Expanded Edition]

Fern Kinney’s 1979 debut album “Groove Me” did not produce any across the board smashes like Anita Ward or Stephanie Mills did. But it did produce two club classics that set dance floors on fire and that was no easy feat during Disco obsessed 1979. Both the title track and “Baby Let Me Kiss You” became regulars at clubs across the country. A closer listen to Fern Kinney’s full length album shows the Northern Soul vocalist at home with Disco, R&B, Quiet Storm ballads and Pop Music. An accomplished vocalist, Kinney at times sounds like Deniece Williams. “Under Fire”, “Angel On The Ground”, “Pillow Talk”, and “Together We Are Beautiful” are all lush mid-tempo R&B songs with a driving Disco beat. “Sun, Moon, Rain” is the sole ballad on the set and Kinney handles it well. Big Thanks to Big Break Records for re-mastering this long out of print obscure album and making it available on CD. As is always the case with any BBR re-master, the sound is great, the liner are interesting and informative and the original album cover art front and back is preserved. There are Bonus tracks galore here, 7 in all. 5 of these have never been available previously and are making their debut on CD. “Let’s Keep It Right There”, “I Want You Back”, “Movie Show” are great R&B Disco songs, while “Tonight’s The Night” and “Sweet Life” are two beautiful straight forward R&B ballad duets with Frederick Knight. “Sweet Life” later became a hit for Paul Davis but Kinney’s version is far superior. “Baby Let Me Kiss You” and the title track are also available here in their Single Versions as Bonus Tracks as well as in their original full length album versions. A must have for R&B/Disco collectors.
