    Groupe emblématique du folk britannique, Fairport Convention se forme à Londres en 1967 à l'initiative du chanteur et guitariste Simon Nicol et du bassiste Ashley Hutchings. La formation complétée par Richard Thompson (chant, guitare), Judy Dyble (chant), Ian Matthews (chant) et Martin Lamble (batterie) vit en communauté et importe au Royaume-Uni le folk rock américain. Son répertoire inclut d'autres influences comme le rock'n'roll, le blues, les ballades traditionnelles et le rock psychédélique sur le premier album homonyme. La nouvelle chanteuse, Sandy Denny (1947-1978), fait ses débuts sur le disque suivant What We Did on Our Holidays (1969). Cette période qui englobe les albums Unhalfbricking et Liege & Lief, sortis la même année, marque l'apogée de la formation produite par Joe Boyd pour le label Island. En dépit de fréquents changements de musiciens, Fairport Convention maintient sa réputation avec les arrivées de Dave Swarbrick (violon, chant) et Dave Mattacks (basse, remplacé par Dave Pegg), après le décès de Martin Lamble et les départs successifs de Sandy Denny, Ian Matthews, Ashley Hutchings et Richard Thompson. Le retour éphémère de Sandy Denny donne lieu à l'album Rising for the Moon (1975). Groupe de référence à l'influence durable, Fairport Convention crée en 1979 le festival Copredy, lors duquel il se produit aux côtés de ses pairs et de nouvelles formations folk. En 2017, le vingt-huitième album studio 50:50@50 marque son cinquantième anniversaire.
