Chicago: The Living Legends is the 1961 album by the Franz Jackson's Original Jass All-Stars with assistance from Bob Shoffner. Originally released on Riverside Records, this was released on CD in 1993 by Original Jazz Classics/Fantasy Jazz on 20 August, 1993.
In 1961, Chris Albertson did the jazz world a major service by documenting some of the 1920s and '30s veterans who were still active but had not been heard from on a major label in quite some time. Franz Jackson, featured on this CD reissue exclusively on clarinet, was playing regularly in Chicago at the time. Teamed with trumpeter Bob Shoffner (who had played with King Oliver in the mid-1920s), trombonist John Thomas, pianist Rozelle Claxton, banjoist Lawrence Dixon, Bill Oldham on tuba and drummer Bill Curry, Jackson plays mostly Dixieland standards and tunes from the 1920s, with the exception of his "Blue Thursday." Although this set only shows off one side of Franz Jackson, whose main instrument is really the tenor, it is quite enjoyable and gives listeners a rare late-period look at the still-viable Bob Shoffner.
