Released in 1989, "Ghosts Upon the Road" was Eric Andersen's first American album in 12 years. Making his best album since his classic "Blue River". The sound here is friendly, rich and mostly acoustic. Andersen's smoked tenor is as reassuring as ever, and his deft control of melody pleasingly familiar. The Stories here are not all pretty, but they ring true, even if it hurts. "Though a lot of the songs on the album were written in Norway, they're very much about America," Mr. Andersen said. "I can see New York City more clearly when I'm away from it that when I'm there".

Eric Andersen is one of America's finest lyric-poet songwriters. With a career spanning more than 30 years, he stands with his comtemporaries –- Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell –- as one of the few remaining pioneers of the '60's singer-songwriter movement continuing to do important work. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA and grew up in Amherst, NY. After two years of college, he took his guitar and headed west in search of his literary heroes of the Beat Generation. In the early 1960's, Eric was discovered in a San Francisco coffee house by Tom Paxton, who invited him to New York to join the Phil Ochs/Bob Dylan writing circle. Soon his songs were being covered by artists such as Judy Collins and Peter, Paul and Mary. Throughout the '60's and '70's, Eric recorded a variety of albums for Vanguard Records, Warner Bros., Columbia Records and Arista. His collaborators included Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Buddy Guy, The Band and The Grateful Dead. The Dead also recorded versions of his songs, as did Linda Ronstadt, John Denver and Rick Nelson. In 1966, Eric appeared in the Andy Warhol film, "Space", co-starring Edie Sedgwick. In 1972, Eric's recording career reached new heights with the release of "Blue River" on Columbia Records. The Rolling Stone Album guide in 1992 called it the "best example of the '70's singer-songwriter movement."

I first heard some of the material on this album when Eric Andersen appeared at the now defunct Folkways Coffee House in Peterborough, New Hampshire on Thanksgiving eve in 1992. Andersen is the real thing, a super talent who writes, composes, and performs mostly his own material. That night his rendition of a number of the songs here, including "Belgian Bar" "Spanish Steps", and "Irish Lace" brought oohs and ahs from the crowd. Yet his confessional retrospective by way of the truly magical "Ghosts Upon The Road' blew us all away, bringing chills, cheers, and a standing ovation from the hundred or so members of the audience, who were moved by his graphic, emotional, and deeply personal evopcations of life early on in the folk years at the beginning of the 1960s.

Andersen has long been a personal favorite of mine, and is even better in person than on CD, which is no mean feat. Herein, from the opening bars of "Carry Me Away" to Six Senses of Darkness", he gives new credence to the idea that real talent can continue to grow and mature litteraly over decades and decades. Like James Taylor or Van Morrison, Andersen's music is based on timeless melodies and lyrics, but unlike these other superstars, he imbues his songs with a gritty edge that reveal his insight into the nature of things. Most of the songs in this CD are written by Andersen, and the range of his writing and composition talent is apparent. His voice is at once sweet, mellow, and smoky, and his ability and arrangements based around his sparkling acoustic guitar work is marvelous to listen to again. Buy this album, listen to it, and be prepared to be entertained and amazed.
