    Soundtrack, Score | Label: Film Score Monthly | # FSM Vol.9 No.14 | Time: 00:59:56

It has taken eight years and over 130 CDs but FSM finally releases a score by the great Ennio Morricone: Guns for San Sebastian (1968), commonly known as a western but more accurately a historical adventure set in Mexico circa 1750. The film stars Anthony Quinn as an outlaw who is mistaken for a priest and protects a humble village against a violent tribe of Indians; Charles Bronson is the antagonist and Anjanette Comer the love interest. Filmed in Mexico, the international production is a sunburnt, action-packed look at a violent time in colonial Latin American history.

The late 1960s were an especially fertile period for Ennio Morricone, whose prolific genius has enhanced hundreds of films for over 40 years. By 1968 Morricone had already scored the groundbreaking Dollars trilogy for Sergio Leone—establishing the revolutionary style for the "spaghetti" westerns—and Guns for San Sebastian preceded their western masterpiece, Once Upon a Time in the West. In both films, the operatic grandeur of Morricone's transcendent themes enhance the spiritual journey of a stranger in a strange land, orchestrated for choir as well as orchestra; in Guns for San Sebastian, voices appears for the "religion" theme (for Quinn's priest friend) and the love theme, the latter featuring the voice of Edda Dell'Orso.

Guns for San Sebastian is also an action film and Morricone responded with violent, percussive music for the Yaquis Indians, with vocal cries by Gianna Spagnulo (who also performed on Morricone's Navajo Joe and Moses). In addition, Morricone wrote heartfelt, deceptively simple melodies for the peasants whose humanity grounds the story, and unique cues as needed for scenes of action, suspense and humor.

Guns for San Sebastian has been available on LP and CD over the years, but always in a brief (33:24) program with deficient sound quality. This premiere CD of the complete score (resequenced in film order) has been remixed and remastered from the original 1/2" stereo tapes (recorded in Italy) for superior sound quality. It is the definitive presentation of this classic Morricone score.

This glorious Ennio Morricone soundtrack is phenomenal. It compares well with his masterwork "Once Upon A Time In The West" and, although the themes he writes here can be more action-oriented, some marvelous similarities shine through. Though close, it's not quite as varied thematically as "OUATITW", but, the themes themselves are sometimes just as strong. Futhermore it can be just as epic and every bit as spiritual. "Guns" was released in 1968, a year before "OUATITW", and some have said this was, in effect, a dry run for that 1969 masterpiece. The ground here is somewhat familiar in that it features the amazing wordless vocals of Edda Dell'Orso, the Italian opera singer whose performances wowed fans of Morricone's "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" - and of course "OUATITW" - and even well beyond.

"Guns", the movie, is an internationally produced historical adventure set in Mexico, circa 1750. Anthony Quinn is Leon, an outlaw who is hiding out in an impoverished farming village. Charles Bronson is Teclo, a half-breed who induces an aggressive band of Yaqui Indians to harass the town. The new stranger Leon is mistaken by the townspeople as a priest and they repeatedly look to him for guidance against the marauding Yaqui, but, Leon is torn between his self-interests and the needs of the humble peasants. Thrown into the mix is Kinita (Anjanette Comer) who plays Leo's love interest.

Morricone wrote a deceptively simple theme to reflect the humble servitude of the peasants that ties into the christian religious side of the score, and the Yaqui have their own theme that can be aggressive, yet can also be equally spiritual - underlining the Indians' own humanity. The score is mostly centered around this "christian-vs-pagan" duality. If you've never heard this score before, you may be surprised to learn that this soundtrack has, aesthetically, an amazingly successful love theme that, with the talents of Dell'Orso, becomes beautifully and easily trancendent. Then again, to Morricone fans, that may come as no surprise at all. For spirituality on the Yaqui side of the score, there is the no-less talented Gianna Spagnulo whose wordless Indian cries are an equally spiritual answer to Dell'Orso's heavenly tones.

The different themes, in the hands of Morricone, offer up both simplicity and complexity in the use of melodies, alternating in and out of major and minor key, and the themes are woven together and relate to one another with a particular deftness of composition that is highly rewarding to listen to - again and again.

The Film Score Monthly label has done it again and released yet another deserving (and expanded) soundtrack - this one remastered from the original 1/2" three-track tapes for the best available sound. Highly recommended to all soundtrack buffs and a must-have for Morricone fans.
