“Another Word For Joy” is an uplifting experimental album that combines elements of dance, electronics, punk, rock and pop to create a uniquely expressive and original album. Enjoy is a one of a kind that with time should reach the forefront of the musical landscape.
The album begins with an electronic synthesized sound that gives you the sense of movement, which is appropriate as the opening track is called “Travel.” The song is filled with fuzz guitar nuance and hidden depths, the layered effect of vocals; noise and instruments bring the song an unusual blend of inviting feelings that make you want to keep listening. Right from the start the energy of the dance floor is all too evident with every hook and groove of the song… and this is only the start of the album.
But just who or what is Enjoy. Enjoy is the solo project of Wyatt Shears, a 22 year old native of the city of Orange in Southern California. Wyatt Shears is best known for his punk band The Garden, which was formed with his twin brother, Fletcher, in 2011 (they were only 17 years old at the time). Shortly after the emergence of The Garden Wyatt formed his own solo project Enjoy in which he writes and performs all the songs. In 2013 Wyatt also began working as a runway model for Yves Saint Laurent.
“What It Takes” moves with a funk and cosmopolitan jazz synth inspired groove that emanates a shimmering bright good feel. The music is minimalist while remaining experimental and authentic. Wyatt’s lead vocal contains varying degrees of intensity and dynamics yet stays with in the realm of simplicity. Parts of “What It Takes” reminds me of Ian Dury and the Blockheads 1978 new wave disco album “Do It Yourself.”
The album has a certain avant-garde style that is present throughout the entire experience. It’s comfortable yet interestingly dark.
With each song the album continues to proceed with and discover interchangeable genres and moods. “Tribal Place” blends tribal dub beats with 80’s new wave quirkiness while “Love Cloud” is atmospheric and dreamily sequenced with glittering synthesized vibes and sound effects incorporating varying clouds of vocalization. Toward the end of the song the music creates a sort of soft cloudburst.
The album never lets up on the beat; this is a true dance album in its very unique form. DJ’s take note this album is about to explode all over every dance floor across the U.S.A. The music is forward moving and futuristic while looking back on genres that have shaped today’s music.
I am really intrigued with the way that Wyatt fits as many lyrics as possible into one minute of time, as he aptly does in “World Music.” The song highlights a Joy Division-esqe bass line that filled the song with a rhythmic darkness.
In an interview Wyatt has said, “I usually set out to make ‘feel-good’ sounds with attractive melodies.” He writes from his personal experiences, which gives his song an honest and authentic quality.
As I listen to the album have hear hints of The Cure and Joy Division wrapped inside the original sounds and style so expertly concocted by Wyatt Shears.
“Just Like We Met” conveys a style very similar to The Cure from their early 80’s “Pornography” and “The Top” era. The music infuses sounds of gentle drops of water on landscapes of metal.
My favorite song on the album is “The Golden State,” I am drawn to the lyric as Wyatt sing-speaks, “I’m living in California.” I love California and love songs that name the state in its lyrics. There’s just something about that laidback California style. Toward the end of the song we’re treated to a soft parade of sound and joy of pop-filled hooks and melodies.
“Why@” brings a certain happiness to me as I hear Wyatt sing his name throughout the song… and if this makes sense I love the happy drums.
The album closes with “Geography,” a strong song that makes you wish the album would never end. I really like Wyatt’s “fight song” punk inspired type vocals that at times are double and triple tracked. The most interesting aspect of the song is the unusual time signatures on the vocal parts; Wyatt handles the vocals perfectly without err. Again we hear hints of Joy Division and The Cure with a bit of Red Hot Chili Peppers wrapped in an original style belonging only to Wyatt Shears.
I love originality and “Another Sound For Joy” succeeds in capturing my attention for the unique. The album is full of commendable contradictions. Each song contains a sense of hope in the obscurity of the music, with a darkness present in a very joyful way. Beyond the unique music style I am impressed with the fact that Wyatt writes all his songs and his style is recognizable upon first listen. Wyatt is not your ordinary 22 year old as he enjoys the funk hooks of Earth, Wind and Fire and the trumpet style of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
Last little tidbit on this album it was released by Burger Records located in little ole Fullerton, CA, this little indie company has the potential to grow unbounding as they have quite an impressive roster of new music acts, I will be reviewing another Burger artist within one week.
