This fantastic compilation picks up the First period of his brilliant career as any other compilation never did it. Mercurial and epic pianism at its best. His Brahms - exultant and thundering - exceed his late readings with Jochum (less profound if you may, but much more expansive and less restrained). His reading about Shostakovich Sonata 2 is out of this world.
Emil Gilels' evolution through the years is worthy to comment. He went through three well different stages, his early years during the Fifties until the collaboration with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago; then a stage of deep introspection (1963.1968) and finally his most dazzling stage (which reveals a notable spiritual delevopment) in which he recorded with The Amadeus Quartet Brahms Op. 25 (To my mind his best artistic achievement), and his fabulous Mozart's 27 with Jochum and his famous album of Schubert (Four hands with Elena Gilels her sister).
