Egisto Macchi has written two very good musical scores for two movies telling events of human history, filled with big drama and pain: “THE TROTSKY ASSASSINATION” directed by Joseph Losey in 1972 and “THE MATTEOTTI MURDER” directed by Florestano Vancini in 1973. All the Contemporary side of Egisto Macchi’s music powerfully explodes in these two scores, as complex and effective results of his work as a member of NUOVA CONSONANZA, a musical school touching the roots of “TROTSKY” and “MATTEOTTI” Both scores are recorded here for the first time. It gives Soundtracks collectors and music buffs a chance to enter a new and fascinating world, where orchestra and extraordinary electronic sounds are joined. For “THE TROTSKY ASSASSINATION” Macchi gives us the proof of his grand capability and talent as a serious Contemporary composer and musician. The 7 tracks here excerpted from the original score feature extraordinary sound inventions. Egisto Macchi has created for “TROTSKY” a pastiche of orchestral and electronic sounds. The human voice becomes in the soundtrack a real instrument with its real “corpus” It inserts itself in an evocatively atonal context and the resulting magma of sounds shocks and at the same time fascinates the listener A confused and ominous whisper of introduction mixes with a strings carpet on which a sad theme for voices is developed. A harsh and awful electronic whistle dominates the mixture or-chestra-choir The trumpet accompanied by rolls of drums with an Hispanic flavour, is followed then by the reprise of the chaotic whisper of voices, as background to the strings and choir, where the trumpet later briefly reprised, seems to fade afar repressed in the magma of electronic tonalities.

The electronic whistle, sharp and penetrating, together with painful strings, seems to have a presentiment of the future, tragic events. Macchi builds worrying musical passages played by the strings at their highest register that in unison with electronic sounds produce a gloomy atmosphere.

Other musical moments emerge from a constant atonal dialogue between the woodwinds and the string sections. For “THE MATTEOTTI MURDER”, Egisto Macchi has built other very dramatic musical atmospheres stirred by a solid performance of the orchestra. This CD includes 6 musical sequences that ideally express all the Pathos of the Historical-Political event. Obsessive and violent orchestral Fortissimo are interspersed with curious woody sounds (SEQUENCE 1). A dramatic atmosphere is give through the original invention to pronunce the consonant R in unison with rumbling and strong orchestral Crescendo where the strings solemnly intervene (SEQUENCE 2). The Orchestra plays a fast and intentionally chaotic movement, while on the background of Piano and percussions the strings play a nearly religious, strongly subdued motiv, then the vigorous refrain for brass, percussions and piano comes back sustained with the effect of the woody reverberations (SEQUENCE 3). The solemn, quite mystical theme is reprised, then the strings create musical moments of big intolerability, mixing themselves with a far and scarcely perceptible voice (SEQUENCE 4). The brimful sound of the cellos features again, deeper and more mysterious, the solemn-mystic theme, than the orchestral Fortissimo previously heard concludes the cue (SEQUENCE 5). The drama and the woe of the Matteotti murder are described for the last time by the solemn-mystic theme that now assumes nearly the role fo REQUIEM to celebrate the death of a man (SEQUENCE 6). To sum up, Maestro Macchi succeded in applying admirably the concept of “Contemporary Music” on the Cinematographic image, a kind of music that becomes here “SOUNDTRACK TO HUMAN HISTORY” that is contemporary description of a social-political event through that fascinating palette colours of a musical pentagram. This compact disc can be considered a painter’s picture.
