Dudley Taft returns with the blistering Skin and Bones. Somewhere along the musical spectrum resting firmly between the Texas Blues of ZZ Top and the Southern Rock of Lynyrd Skynyrd you will find the musical stylings of Dudley Taft. The guitar slinger is back with another batch of tunes that will rattle your teeth and shake your bones. Built around classic blues riffs, driving rock guitars and a hint of metal Dudley Taft continues to blend the past and present to create one hell of a bad ass sound.

The latest record from Taft and company – Skin and Bones – may be his most complete. As listeners weave their way through the profusion of musical layers Taft has packed into the album their auditory senses will be assaulted from every angle.

The album opens up with the title track, “Skin and Bones”, a nasty blues number loaded with chunky guitars and a hint of gospel. The backing vocals and soulful keyboards are what take this tune from good to great. From there the album just gets bigger and bolder as Dudley Taft and band move through each song with the precision of a fine tuned engine. The tracks “Lonesome Memphis Blues”, “One of These Days” and “Mojo Woman” emphasize Taft’s ability to shift gears without losing anything in the quality of his music. While the entire record is worth the listen there are two songs that stand out. On “Leland Mississippi Blues” Taft harnesses the ghosts of the Delta’s greatest blues legends. The song is everything you could ask for in a blues tune. At the heart of the song is Taft’s sultry guitar playing complimented by subtle rhythms and some nasty keyboards. Possessing a harder edge than most of the other songs on Skin and Bones, with “Space Cake” Taft unleashes a song that is straight out of 70’s rock that will satisfy many. One final song worth mentioning is “Ain’t About the Money”. Reaching deep into his bag of tricks Taft delivers a sludge filled piece of music that ventures into a Black Sabbath type territory. It is a nice piece to the overall album.

From the very beginning to the final note Skin and Bones is a strong and entertaining release. Dudley Taft has stepped up his game releasing by far his best album to date. There is something for everyone on this record as Taft successfully blends different genres to create his signature sound. So crank up the album, pick up your air guitar and start jamming because you are going to want to.
