    Detlev Schmidtchen, born in 1954 in Wolfenbüttel, had been an important piece of the Eloy core during the second half of the 70's.He started his career with Getriebe, before meeting Frank Bornemann in a 75' festival, where the winners had the opportunity to have dinner with Eloy, who were the headliners.After four intense years with the German legends, he left along with Jürgen Rosenthal to form the short-lived duo Ego on the Rocks.While remaining involved in the music scene during the rest of the 80's and the 90's, Schmidtchen's surprising comeback occured in 2007 with his first solo album ''The last planet- chapter 1: Impressions'' on Jks-world, where he handles all instruments and vocals.Things have really changed around Prog music since the 70's and Schmidtchen tried to be up-to-date with the current scene with an album that, although keeping some of the fundamentals of the past, sounds modern, fresh but rather flat and sterile in the process.One reason for this is the lack of natural instruments, with the drums, some cheap keyboards and additional strings being programmed, but sounding quite horrible in terms of production.Most keyboards used are digital synthesizers with a small addition of organs and clavinet.Stylistically the album opens nicely with the Eloy-influenced ''Seven bells'', very atmospheric and spacey track with balanced keyboard and guitar parts in an evident 70's enviroment, pretty similar to the German Kraut/Space Rock bands of the time.A couple of bland and indifferent tracks later, the album turns into a Shamall-like experience with long, synth-drenched explorations, repetitive bass lines and drum pounds and little guitar contribution with a slight Tangerine Dream feel.That refers to the long instrumental pieces ''Impressions'' and ''Rakiedanus'', because the rest of the album is similar to the worst side of Shamall, having evident vibes from Synth/New Wave music from the 80's and being closer to Dance Music than Space/Electronic Rock.At least the track, which carries the title of ''ELOIS Spirit'', is decent Electronic Prog with cosmic synthesizers and loops and a very outlandish atmosphere.The best days for Schmidtchen seem to be long gone, at least on this album, which is pretty average Electronic/Space Rock with notable flaws in the instrumental sections.
